Is Metal detecting on the beach legal in Cancun, MX?

Maybe you guys/gals can answer this question. I'd be on the beach near the builtup area with condo's and hotels, not looking for ancient artifacts which will send me to a mexican jail for the rest of my life! Any ideas? Thanks.

I'm headed there for the last 12 days of February and have posted a similar question on the Beach and Water Forum. Keep an eye on that post for responses. It would be fun to have a hunt with someone else instead of soloing it. I'll be a little busy getting open water certified but otherwise you will find me in the water swinging my Excal at Cancun or at Playa del Carmen.

Cheers,

tons of pesos....never had to pay for the bus while we were there. I liked to walk the beach and hit the volleyball courts on the beaches. Have fun. Make sure you remove the batteries before you try to board.

Thanks Keith:

I was thinking I should put the batteries in my check luggage but I don't know if that would be better or worse as most luggage out of Bermuda gets X-rayed.

On the flight over...I had new batteries in their package and no problems as they weren't in my carry-on bags. But on this one trip I forgot about them on the flight out of Cozumel....oh boy did they get bent...I took them out and threw them in the trash in front of them and they calmed down enough to continue boarding.

Hi bdahunter- I am new to this forum but have water hunted for years. I would like to know how you did in Playa del Carmen. I will be there in June and want to spend alot of time water detecting- got to believe there's lots of good stuff down by the high-end resorts in Playacar and/or the many neat little places south of there ( i.e Akumal, Puerto Adventuras, etc. as well as the main beaches in Playa...Thanx !

I did very poorly during my hunts in Mexico both at Playa del Carmen and at Isla Mujeres. The weather was cold, the surf was rough and the beaches were sanded in; a few pesos for my trouble was all I got.
Your luck may be better but the water didn't yield much for me. I lost a lot of my hunting time by spending it showing a friend how it was done, more teaching than hunting I'm afraid. I don't think my student was very impressed with the results either.

Good Hunting to You,

PS I heard that many of the beaches had be replenished after the big hurricane a few years ago and access to the high end resorts is very difficult to get unless you are staying at one.

ive been hunting isla mujeres for years each winter,it all depends on how the storms hit.one time theres beach forever and the next there no beach at all,at one time it was like going to the bank, you always left with something.this year will be 18 years hunting isla,we are planning on going down to mahahual this year to check on some land we have down there,i don't think we will do any hunting the town is just about gone do to the last storm a few month ago..we also fish a handline barracuda bash while on isla in late jan, what a great time.heres there page.www.wax-n-wane.com

if anyone down in cancun from jan till march, take the ferry over to isla mujeres and have a beer, ill be at the hotel vistalmar, room 302.its a great little island with some great beach.it seem more and more tourist come with detectors, this past jan,i met six,one was a couple.its nice to meet new people who hunt.i also fish six days a week from 7am till about 1pm all depends on how there biting,i fish with a local who sell them ,me i just take what my lady wants for supper and the rest is the capts.unless we have friends for supper,we cook on the third floor of the hotel, good fish, great beer and what a view, how bad can life get.

hi folks, i'll be in Cancun end Nov thru Dec 5, any input on hunting the surf there? is it ok to approach high end hotels from the water Vs from the beach? i hear it is ok, but that there are some of the security folks that turn you away. anhy inout as to success in the area? i'm relatively newe to MD and am excited about my trip. cheers! Tom

Just got back last week from a resort between cancun and playa del carmen. Found some pesos, a couple pair of nice rayban sunglasses, some silver jewelry, various coins, a ton of aluminum, and 1 gold earring. The beaches are public property and you are allowed to hunt them. Good luck

Cool. Any issues getting metal detector through customs at the airport? I’ve flown with it in US but not out of country. Thanks.

I never hear of somebody having any isues at the customs in Mexico for a metal detector.

By the way, I will be MH at Cozumel from 13th to 19th December 2018.

Best Regards.

That's because they didn't ask long enough, high enough, and rattle a bunch of chains asking "can I?". If they had, then .... they might have arrived at different information to their "pressing question". After all, detectors are a "dangerous weapon", and 'capable of interfering with flight navigation equipment". Blah blah blah.
