IS MEDAL DETECTING A SPORT OR HOBBY?

Here is the definition of a SPORT:
Sport is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. Sports commonly refer to activities where the physical capabilities of the competitor are the sole or primary determiner of the outcome (winning or losing), but the term is also used to include activities such as mind sports and motor sports where mental acuity or equipment quality are major factors.

Here is the definition of a HOBBY:
Hobbies are practiced for interest and enjoyment, rather than financial reward. Examples include collecting, creative and artistic pursuits, making, tinkering, sports and adult education. Engaging in a hobby can lead to acquiring substantial skill, knowledge, and experience. However, personal fulfillment is the aim.

So it is a hobby/sport, sport/hobby, hobby or sport. Whatever it is called it is fun (and profitable).

And don't forget ADDICTION:
An addiction is a recurring compulsion by an individual to engage in some specific activity, despite harmful consequences to the individual's health, mental state or social life. The term is often reserved for drug addictions but it is sometimes applied to other compulsions, such as problem gambling, and compulsive overeating. Factors that have been suggested as causes of addiction include genetic, biological/pharmacological and social factors.

After all, there is financial gain. What was that bible verse about the love of filthy lucre! I think that the big fella must have known about Charles Garrett.:rofl: Perhaps we need to turn from our evil ways.
It's just as well, he has a sense of humour. After all, he created women. Can you imagine the fun he gets out of watching us trying to stay out of the dog house.

I think it is a little of all 3.

[quote Uncle Willy]Yeah it's a hobby us sports are all addicted to.

I would have to say its a hobby. HOWEVER, like a sport that has a set of rules, the only rules asked of metal detectionist are that we repspect
the property we detect on and that we respect the owners as well. If they say "No" to our detecting on their property then no it is. There's too many other places we can go. The only time MDing might drift over into the domain of SPORT is as one member said, when there is a compition, or in my opinion when the cows on the back forty start to chase your butt and you have to run like hell and see if you can jump the fence without hurting yourself!:detecting:

Money (filthy lucre) is not evil, but the LOVE of money is evil. So it is not a sin to be rich. If you love money more than God that is the sin. I believe Charles Garrett is a good man and puts God first. That is why God has blessed him.

I think you hit it right on the second part. Does help us (men) keep in line. I guess that is a blessing.

G'day John.
I was only taking poetic licence. Since Garrett's make a machine that finds coins (as well as other stuff) invariably they are going to be dirty.:poke: you are quite right though. It is the love of it that is the problem. Just think of all the grief that is caused by greed ( which is only an extension of the nature of man). I won't go any deeper than that, as it's a detecting forum and not a religious one.
Mick Evans.

'cause I'd need to take the whole bottle. Sure am glad I don't have to put up with cabin fever. Haven't had to outrun a herd of cattle yet either.

It is both. If you go to a sponsored hunt, then it is a sport. If you go out for the day to relic hunt, coin hunt, etc., then it is a hobby. HH...Jesse.
