I went to my inlaws this weekend for a funeral, but Saturday moring I got up and decided to go detecting.
I went to this place close to the motel,it was an old abandond house.Lots and lot of trash around from where people dump all kinds of crap, looked like atleast 2 decades worth.
Anyway,I had a solid hit for a quarter,42 every way that I swung the coil over it @ 2'' deep. But I dug about 6'' and still nothing, even though the detector was still showin it was there @ 2'' deep.
I just quit and looked around a bit, didnt think it would be worth waistin time diggin for nothin.

Any idea why it did that?

It could have been a piece of deep lead or copper or a crushed soda can. Large, deep targets throw off the depth reading. Like Randy says, you never know for sure unless you dig it. Ron

Next time lift your coil off the ground about 8 to 12 in. and see if you get a hit. If you do its most likely junk or a  stash its up to you to find out. If you dig there's two things thats going to happen one= or two=:clapping: When in doubt dig. HH

How many times do I have to tell you hoople heads dig it until you see it!! Like Kansas says when doubt dig!!!

The only 100% sure discriminator out there is a shovel. If you are in an area that could hold some good old stuff and it's ok to dig, then DIG!!!
Case in point. I was detecting at an old place where you could dig every signal because it was just an old torn up area anyway. I atarting getting all of these big hits and dug up a bunch of older aluminum op cans. I was starting to get tired of it when I got another "pop can" hit. I dug it anyway and came up with a green from being in the ground brass Keen Kutter railroad padlock. It was pretty neat and taight me a valuable lesson. When in doubt....DIG!!!
Good luck and HH. Bob.

I agree with one of the posters about it being something large. Dont rely to heavily on that depth gauge either.

You can try widening the hole as it could be a coin on edge or at an angle with can throw the pinpoint off. I will dig as deep as I know the detector will go, maybe a little more and then I move on. 6" is pretty shallow for the 70:cheers:

Best of luck to you, those trash laden sites can be a real challenge.

If I got a solid 42, I would keep looking until I found it. And, I wouldn't consider it a waste of time at all. Just part of the hobby!

Its a little too late now,I'm 2 hours away. But we'll be back down there in a couple a weeks.I'll try diggin a few inches larger dia. when I go back.

Its just that place was a trash pile, and a party place.
Plus it was in the mid 20's and I was'nt dress for that,I didnt expect it to get that cold.I didnt really plan on MDing,I took it just in case.

Your detector is obviously seeing something in the ground...I would dig to china to get it.....
on targets like this try lifting your coil about a foot off the ground & see if the signal is still strong.....large deep object can give this scenario cans, iron, listen very close to the AUDIO signal is it solid or disrupted or jumpy.......could be a deep mason jar loaded with silver dollars, in any event keep investigating it. This is what we do DIG METAL !

When in Doubt DIG & lift the suspicion:minelab:

Was detecting one site had a couple real strong signal that appeared to be to good.... lifted the coil and still got a good signal... passed it off as iron trash or an aluminum can. Some friends came behind me and dug a Morgan dollar! If the area is old dig everything that gives a good signal!

I say that it is there but probably is a quarter on an angle and when you find it it will not be centered under the coil but located off to one side of the hole. This is what I have found many times. The Xterra70 is very good at finding this type of target and one of the best things that will help is a good pinpointer. It will detect these targets and save you a bunch of time as it does its work. Let us know what or if you find the target and I hope this will help.
