is it possible to set the SE such that deeper coins ring with the same

tone and frequency as shallow coins but associate the deeper ones with a lower volume?

i went out for a marathon hunt today and just plain struck out. 2 old parks gave up very few deep signals. i found 1 wheat that was the only deep repeater all day. Same went for my partner who struggled all day as well, however, at about hour 6, he located an 1808 LC in great shape.

Bryce, where would i find your recommended settings for coin hunting?

thanks much,

Aaron

A lower gain will make the deeper ones sound deep and the shallower ones sounds shallow.
Personally...I like the high gain because I want the deeper faint chirps to be as loud to my ears as they can.

Give me a few minutes and I'll send you a pm with how I set my SE up...but my gain is jacked...so they might not be what you're looking for.

good combinations of settings that work well together for many different hunters.

Well...I should say...At least my settings aren't magic anyway:biggrin:...at least not for me.

Most all of the guys who hunt in conductive sounds hunt with some iron mask.

While some like fast on/deep off...some might like fast off/deep on...some might like them both on...some might like them both off...etc.

As for sensitivity...some like semi auto...while some like manual.

Some think manual gives better depth because the semi auto setting can over compensate at times in bad ground....while some don't notice it...including myself.

Some like lower gain so they can distinguish between shallow and deep coins.
Me personally...I prefer high gain so I can hear those deep faint silver chirps as best as I can.

I think the only thing we all agree on as a universal setting is....adjusting the threshold hum to barely audible:cheers:

As for most all other settings...it's a matter of personal preference as to what our ears have been trained to hear.

That personal preference can only be obtained after tons of hours on the machine...especially the explorers because they have their own unique language:cool:

Changing just one setting by only one number...such as variability...can really change the tone you hear over a deep silver coin.

My point to all of this rambling....just don't try too much and get frustrated. Just keep playin' and experimenting with little things here and there.

You will find some group of settings that click for you before long...and they might not be mine.

You might even want to try ferrous sounds and an open screen. There are some fellers' who really do well that way.

Trust me though...there are no magic settings.

If you are attempting to modulate your tone you new to play with your GAIN. The lower you go the more deeper targets are modulated. I wouldnt go below 6. Now if you are talking about wanting the deep coin to have the same volume... then a GAIN of 10 is the way to go....every thing sounds the same. Volume wise you still will tell those surface coins from the deeper ones. Also try keeping your threshold to barely audioable. Sometimes having your sensitivity to high affects how well you find those deep coins. If you set it to high in areas with a lot of iron or trash it tends to try to go too deep and all the deeper iron will cause your detector to null and desensisize your coil reducing depth. Also, another posibility is the soil has been moved around in your areas and the deeper coins are beyond your detector.

Gain is the setting that will accomplish what you want, BUT you need good headphones too. You're messing with sounds and volume, and cheap headphones are going to make it harder. The better your headphones, the better you can hear the subtle differences in tones and volume. I use Grey Ghosts. I tried RatPhones (did not prefer them) and used Jolly Rogers for a long time, but with the Explorer and E-Trac I like the Grey Ghosts best.

Thanks Kennon. I appreciate that buddy.

Hopefully you and I can hook up and hunt this year. It's been a while.
