Is it possible to add a ground balance mod to a Silver uMax?

zinc

New member
I've seen the modification to add manual ground balance to the Cibola. I was wondering if if it was possible to do the same for the Silver uMax. I searched but was unable to find this mod for the Silver, so I'm assuming it's not possible.

TIA

Andy

Yes it is Andy. There is a pot. inside that can be removed/unsolidered and you can solider wires on the pads where the pot. was & run wires from the pads to an adjustable 3 3/4 or 10 turn pot. that you can mount on the faceplate. But warning this will void your warranty. Steve.

Thanks Steve! I was wondering, could I follow the same instructions for the Cibola, or is the circuit board different in the Silver? I guess I'll have to open it up and see.

Andy

Would it be beneficial to make this modification on the Silver that would used over mild to medium soil?

SIlver has no threshold tone. How would you balance with no threshold?

I always say if it ain't broke don't fix it. If the Silver uMax if doing ok for you I wouldn't worry about it. Steve.

If you search the forums you can find posts by Monte that explains this. He words it so it makes alot more sense than I could explain it. But yes a detector with no threshold sound can be ground balanced. Steve.

I believe that Monte calls this power balancing.

Yes, I power ground balanced mine by Monte's instruction. I might add to find the most mineralized place of the area(s) you search to do this and you will then be set for just about all other areas you encounter.Sometimes I get a little "overrun" with the silent threshold in the areas that are less mineralized. Also, be sure to use a plastic technician's screwdriver like they use on tv's to make sure you don't break or injure the pot. I opted, after testing, to back the pot back just a "hair" to where it was just silent in this bad location to avoid much "overrun" in my general hunting spots.

I still do it today. Especially with some models and mainly with Tesoro's, and especially when hunting in what I consider to be higher mineralized sites.

However, I have also said that tinkering with a Tesoro isn't something I'd suggest because the main selling point for many is Tesoro's Lifetime Warranty, so why void it?

Tesoro usually makes/has made a complimentary model that features manual Ground Balance, and perhaps even more adjustment, so why not just buy one of those? I think the Silver

Yeah, Steve. I have already been thinking out an idea of an electric chair arrangement for when I play out on the body parts! I'm trying to figure out the part when I have to bend over to dig. Maybe a rollbar that automatically stops your chair from falling forward.
