Is it harder to find silver dimes?

INCH

New member
I buried a quarter at 6 inches a silver dime at 6 and a clad dime at six inches. went over the quarter with the ATpro (STD mode) and it ate it up I even raised the coil off the ground 8 inches and the AT was good for it. "Heres my problem and question." I went over the dimes with the Pro and no signal , no way . So I went over the dimes with my Ace 250(coin mode) and bounty hunter. no signal, so thats three machines . so I opened the holes up and just dropped the dimes into an open hole and still no signals from all three machines. They all have fresh batteries. They all did good on the air test. The silver dimes I buried Are the ones i found in the ground months ago detecting . Is this the case where a coin that has been in the ground for years is easier to find

I don't think that once a dime is dug up and cleaned it would be any different than one that was never in the ground. But I do think that once a coin has been in the ground awhile it is easier to find. A silver dime will tarnish over time and I guess it might cause a bit of a halo effect? The deepest dime I ever found with my ACE 250 was a silver dime at a measured 9". But that is not to say that every dime can be found at that depth. It was just a one time thing and I am guessing that for whatever reason the conditions were just perfect. Ordinarily, I rarely ever find a dime with my ACE250 below about 5". If the AtPro will rouitinely find a dime at six inches or more I would be very pleased. Onus

Well a clad quarter is a heck of a lot bigger than a dime should answer your question.....In the real world( in the field) after years in the ground copper coins build up a halo whereas as silver coins do not so expect to find for instance a wheat penny deeper as its bigger than a dime and of course built up a halo whereas the silver dime has little or no halo.

I would find a planted coin field buried for years and do your testing..Many dealers have them and of course one of your long time hunters in the club would have one also.

The test you are doing only tells you a metal detector will pick up a larger coin deeper as its recently buried and is useless in judging how your unit will respond in the field especially with old coins buried for 50-100 etc...

I've seen this seemingly odd phenomena many times. When you disturb the ground matrix, you get a different result than with undisturbed soil.

Yeah , the quarter , penny being bigger targets common sense rules . But I was amazed when i dropped the silvers in the open hole and nadda signal from all three machines. thanks for the info on the silver no halo. I gotta asked questions like this , if i didnt I would be stupid

I have to throw this in. The dime is harder to find and since I overlap my coil tightly I find MANY that others miss. I say this because my favorite hunting tip is to pretend you are hunting dimes-OVERLAP THAT COIL. It's one writing that I'm glad Bill often mentions.

Try the Pro mode, You said you tried the STD mode but I quite couldn't make out if you had said you tried the Pro mode.....You said, (I went over the dimes with the Pro and no signal , no way .)...I don't know if you mean going over the dimes in Pro Mode or did you mean going over the dimes with the AT Pro?

Plus, Make sure another signal is not buried near the test coin. Remember the STD mode has a much slower recovery speed. So in trashy areas especially a piece of iron nearby will have a more masking effect on the next signal...

Stay with the Pro mode, Much faster recovery speed and a little more depth.
