Is it Ever Too Trashy?

Went to a spot i had permission to hunt and i'd been putting it off, but had a couple hours of daylight and decided to give it a try. It's an old site, my dad's old home place, over 100 years old, but there's been people living there since the 70's. It's full of trash. Had a real hard time finding a clear spot to ground balance the 705. The machine just goes off continuously, once in a while i'll get a good tone, but it's always amid the iron tones and then when i dig a hole, it'll change. i was in one section that the ProPointer just went off continuously, if you brought it near any section of the ground, yet there didn't seem to be anything there besides dirt. Wondering if someone welded metal there and a bunch of spalls flew out or if they grinded their axes there, or something just rusted up there. I didn't find anything, although i found a silver quarter there a few months ago with my old Radio Shack detector. I was hoping for something similar, but no luck. Is some places just too trashy to hunt?

Penny,
I have hunted many trash infested sites and they are a challenge, but can yield some good finds ( like that silver quarter you found at that site).
A small coil will sometimes help and you have to slow way down and listen to each signal.
Now as far as the pinpointer, I have a site that I hunt every now and then and both of my pinpointersj ust sound off everywhere I probe with them... they are useless at this site.
I don't think it's from trash, but the ground is highly mineralized and I can't ground balance my X-Terra 50 at this site.
I have found some deep coins only when the ground was extremely dry which goes against everything you read about moist ground having the ability to allow better detection of deep targets.
Surprisingly, these coins were found with a Minelab Musketeer detector which has a reputation for being able to detect well in mineralized soil.
This is just a theory, but I haven't found any deep coins when the ground was wet or moist at this site.
Try detecting this site when it is dryer to see if it helps.. just my thoughts.
Good luck,
Felix

I use my 6inch dd in real trashy areas and swing slower than normal.

Thanks Felix, well your site sounds similar to this one about the pinpointers going bonkers. Actually, it was dryer when i found the quarter. It wasn't real wet today, but damp. I'm sure i'll go back again.

7 Centsworth, is that 6" DD 18.75 Freq?

I use smaller coils, e.g. 6" DD or 5x10 DD, solow down the swing and sometimes just wiggle the coil over the target. This works ok for me when I lower the sensitivity to about one-third of full capacity, certainly no more than half.

I like to hunt with heavy disc in heavy trash. I find that both the 6" coils have their
advantages. Try to get a good manual ground balance nearby. My rule of thumb is add (+) to a low tone and
subtract from (-) a high tone when the coil goes to ground. Don't be afraid to lower
the sensitivity. Set up a very "narrow" disc program (one which accepts only the intended targets)
and a "wide" disc program ( one which accepts a notch above and below the intended target).
In this way you can hunt in "wide" and separate in "narrow". I was amazed how well the x-terra
rejects iron but if you must, accept the highest and lowest notches in your "wide" program.

Its never to trashy for that 6" DD (almost). Yes its 18.75khz and that is a great little coil. You would be supprized. There a bunch of guys who run that coil on here. I feel it was worth every penny. It is also very easy to pinpoint with.

If you have the 5x10 DD try running that coil. It will seperate better than the stocker (IMO).

You may find that a coin is among nails that will move your signal around. Last summer I had a signal that was a penny and when pinpointed it was 6" from where I eventually found it. That penny was adjacent to 15 to 18 rusty nails, but sounded loud and clear as a penny. I might have left it had I not dug so many wheats nearby. The more garbage you dig the less you have left to dig and the less there is to interfere with your wheats and mercs.

Yes it is 18.75.

Gday pplinker,

Some of my best "old" sites are trashy eg. when an old building has been demolished
I agree with the DD coil for trash.. and here the 6" rocks !

With the Garrett propointer one thing that I do in that case is to "detune" it...
turn it on whilst holding it near (say 2" away) from a metal object (like my digger)
Then it is not so sensitive and will sometimes guide you in correct direction instead of just going off its nut..

hope this helps a bit, good luck...could be a good site.

Thanks a lot for the replies and suggestions and encouragement. I will go back and hunt that area. After learning most of you have the 6" DD 18.75 coil, i ordered one with my birthday money. VW, about setting up those programs, I'll have get the manual out and read up on that. Turnmaster, i've had similar situations of my penny signal moving but only difference is i never found the penny, LOL. Terra, thanks for the detuning info on the Garrett Pro Pointer.

Waiting for the coil, Tennesse isn't far away from WV, so prob early next week. Not that a coil will solve everythig, i'm still reading everything i can on here and thanks for any and all advice.
