i am new to metal detecting,i just bought a pioneer 505 from a pawn shop for $40 wondering if its a good machine and good price
 
$40 for a 505 is a good deal.

Yes an AWESOME deal. It will pay for itself in no time! I'm currently using the 505 and I'm pleased with it.

I liked the Land Star, my wife liked it about the best of the various detectors we tried out last year. Well, maybe she liked the EuroTek Pro better, but that's another story! The 505 is very similar to the Land Star, the 505 is just lacking the ground balance. I tended to always leave the GB in about the same place anyway, unless it got bumped accidentally while hunting. $40 is an excellent price. You can upgrade on a feature quest if you like, but the 505 will fill the bill just fine.
