Is a Tejon alot for a lot

For the tot lot that is. Hi folks have been using a few different of the older Tesoro's lately and really like them (Bandido II uMax/Cutlass/etc.). Got myself a Cibola recently good machine but didn't find it any advantage over the older Tesoro's I had. I ended up trading it for a Fisher F5 it was an ok detector but not a Tesoro (all you old timers know what I mean)so I sold it and am getting a used Tejon. I have always wanted to try a Tejon,I have read & read all I can find on them and I guess a person either loves them or hates them. I have read many times that they are chatty, love iron & are over powered. Then I read that they are as calm as a cucumber if your turn the sens. down a bit. I hunt in school grounds/parks/tot lots for coins and jewelry never any beach hunting. Is the Tejon too much animal for my type of hunting or will it be alright. Thanks! Steve.

The Tejon I have on my list is $375.00 which is probably a fair price but for that kind of money I could get a really nice older Tesoro. I told the guy that has it that I will take it and if I don't like it I should be able to get most of my $$$ back on it.

Steve I thought you got rid of the Cibola because you said it lacked GB , wasnt tuned properly for your area. If it was I think you would have seen its hotter than the older Tesoros and still gives great iron ID. Same with the Tejon, of course its adjustable, that sens knob really works:cheers:

You will be able to check targets easier with the Tejon with its dual disc and the pitch adjustment is a great feature also. I think you moved up in detectors, give it time.

Ive used mine in a few tot lots right next to the street where powerlines run and had no problem with interference or GBing it. And I dont think they love iron at all, its pretty easy to tell just like it was on your Cibola.

Good luck with it!

Neil

Thanks Neil, yes the ground balance was off for my area (set too negative). Nothing wrong with the Cibola just thought that it would really stand out from the older uMax's,etc. and I didn't find that it did. Maybe set for my soil would of made a big difference, I didn't want to open it up being that it was brand new. I have read some people say that they wouldn't part with their Tejon for anything, I am hoping I will say the same. Been wanting to try one for along time. Steve.

With the 5.3 coil, it's balanced perfect and pin points dead on the red dot on the top of the coil ( I use the concentric). It goes deep and separates with fast recovery. I have hit nickels and small pendants deep...also foil and aluminum too but thats the way it goes.

If the lot isn't too littered with small bits of foil, I set the main discrimination just above iron, if not, then just at foil so the little bits sound scratchy. If coin shooting, set the alt discrim a little higher so the nickles are at the edge of breaking up. Then you can hunt with the main discrimination and when you get a good sounding target, switch over the the alt discrimination. Once you get the idea of how to utilize the 2 discrimination settings, you can find lots of applications where it pays off.

I love my Tejon in the trashy tot lots..then again, I love the Tejon for lots of types of hunting. It finds great stuff.

For tot lots which I don't do often, I have a liking on using the Compadre with the 5.75 coil. Also the Silver uMax with 5.75 coil. That's just me though.

I don't know Steve. You know how to use the Bandido and you know how much you enjoy using it. Why not save some money and get some extra coils for it?

Good price for a Tejon in good shape. If your tot lots are like tot lots I have hit, the Tejon will help you dig the deep things that no one else got ... unless the lot has a fabric weed block and then the Tejon will drive you crazy.

For trashy areas you will want the 5.75 in coil. The concentric is highly recommended and is what I have, the widescan is what some prefer and recommend.

I have started to cover the tot lots with the 3 x 18 cleansweep on the Tejon. It makes quick work of the lots. I'll sweep the ball fields with that set up too and then go to the standard 9 x 8 or the 5.75 inch for school entrance and nearby sidewalk areas that tend to be more trashy.

When I am in areas that have a lot of aluminum trash and foil the Tejon does get a bit chatty. With how I normally run the discriminators, primary just below foil and secondary just below tab so that most tabs start to crackle some, the Tejon will chat on the foil trash. It is a different clipped sound than the solid hits on solid items but is also the sound of small thin chains without pendants.

Tejon works well on tot lots, but sometimes I just go and grab the Compadre and go the super light weight way.

Sure did like it Dang, but sold it in order to buy another detector & so on and so on... Steve.

Yes ski whiz take a look and see whats on the shelf, just the most irratating sounding overpriced machines in the world

The Tejon with the 5.75 coil is absolutely top notch. I have an E-TRAC, a Sovereign, a T2, a Cortes, an Explorer SE, and I had an F75. The two detectors I will not consider selling are the ET and the Tejon. They are the two I always carry with me. The Tejon is simply one of the best detectors ever made. Also. I never take the 5.75 off it and I don't know anyone who uses the stock coil, they all use the 5.75. It is deep and you can swing it as fast as you want. You wont regret getting a Tejon. It is a much better machine than the Cortes, IMO.

I dont think that you''l regret it if ya grab the Tejon and if ya do am looking forward to your views on the Tejon skiwhiz , like ya said it seems to be a love hate relationship for most , when I first joined this board most just bagged the Tejon out for one reason or another " some still do " but from what I can gather it was and is drivin more by politics and second hand views than fact ! No doubt It took me some time to "click" with the Tejon and this may reflect some negative views held by those that didnt bother to put the time in to fully appreaciate this Top notch machine !

I've only had my Tejon a short time so I can't speak with a lot of authority here, but I've found it to be very easy to use and quite stable with either the stock coil or the 5.75 DD.

If you are a long time Tesoro user, I would think you'd be very comfortable with the Tejon.

It's a powerful machine, if someone is mainly hunting for jewelry and clad it will work just fine although it may be more detector than needed.

On the other hand, you say you're hunting parks and schools. If those are older parks and schools the extra power of the TT may come in very handy.
