Iron

I read an interesting post on the E-Trac forum where someone claimed that their Tejon was the best detector they had for finding coins among iron. I've been hunting some homes lately where there's so many nails my other detectors are in a contant null or falsing off every nail.

Can you Tesoro users that have used other high end detectors tell me if this is true?

The tejon works very well amongst nails around old house sites. I hunted a colonial house site with thousands of square nails and didn't dig a nail all day but found a silver coin in the same whole as a nail and a bunch of other good items.

Regards,

VaRelics

Here is a video showing the discriminate of the tejon.

Shambler your setup is wrong or your Tejon is faulty. Tejon is discriminating nails very well and I also regard Tejon as the best detector on the market for an experienced user.

Howdy Shambler

From reading your previous posts I recall that you have a F75 and an EX ll............am i right? For superior performance in nail infested areas, look for an older ED 120 disc. Tesoro, like a first model Bandido or Bandido ll, or Pantera ( two tone discriminator with notch ) all with ten turn manual ground ballance............. or a Silver Sabre ll , same as Bandido but without manual ground balance. You can find these used at a good price ( around $200 ) if you really look hard. They also had a Toltec ll with ED 120, with analog meter , but those are kinda hard to find on the used market. hh........Hombre

I use both Minelabs and Tesoros. In nail infested areas I prefer Tesoros. The best one I've had in this situation was the Vaquero. The Tejon makes more noise but can be used in these areas once you get some time in on it. It's harder to hunt in nails with the Tejon than the Vaquero. But I like the features of the tejon better so I sold the Vaquero. I must admit, I miss it sometimes. Minelabs are good at finding coins next to iron but I don't like them when the ground is saturated with iron. It nulls a lot which cuts depth and causes masking. Minelabs have a slower response. Most people either like one or the other. The thing I don't like about Minelab is their warranty and repair policy. Two years warranty and if it's 10 years old it's considered unrepairable so the won't touch it. I have 2 minelabs and I'm considering selling one and replacing it with a tesoro due to this boneheaded decision. It's all about money.

That's correct! The F75 is killer in nails but ONLY if (my opinion after a lot of usage) you have no EMI and can therefore run 0 disc. Now, that doesn't lend itself to hunting city mansions that have a 150 years of nails in the soil. The 0 disc give you a more clear picture because the tones are more complete and not choppy. The EXII with the pro coil can handle it if you run ferrous tones and a wide open smart screen. That, however, can cause you to be mentally fatigured in only a few hours. I like both of these machines in certain conditions... the EXII is unbeatable in parks and the F75 does REALLY well in field and farm houses that have no EMI. The key to the F75 is the ability to run 0 disc (which puts you in enhanced mode - JE). I've had some awesome sites lately but neither of these machines have done what I would expect. After seeing the video of the modified analog machine on youtube that's picking up a dime in ANY configuration with nails, I got to thinking that maybe I need a specialty machine for these situations. Then I read that an E-Trac user felt his Tejon was better in nails so I thought I'd ask on here. Thanks for the replies!

I have an 1830's mansion right now that in a 8" X 8" hole will normally produce 5 modern nails in the first 4" and 5 square nails in the next 4. I have found a couple of silver coins amongst that, but not what I'd expect considering some things I know about the site.

Is Toltec a manufacturer or a Tesoro machine? What does ED120 mean?

Hi Shambler

Ok, I'll try to explain ED ( expanded discrimintion ) 120.............This means the disc. circuit accepts 120 degrees of the conductivity spectrum, everything metalic from the minimum setting ( just discriminating out a small nail ) to silver dollars. The Tesoro disc circuit is linear analog, meaning that if you disc out pulltabs, you will disc out most gold jewelery. By running minimum disc. you will be knocking out small nails, and hearing everything else including small foil. In old house and old building teardowns sights, I run minimum disc and dig all repeatable signals. The older Tesoros that I mentioned in my previous post work great in these type of places. And yes, the Toltec ll is an older discontinued Tesoro.................HH..........Hombre

You can lay a piece of iron over a coin in a hole and discriminate the Iron out then go over the hole with a Tejon and it will hit on the coin what other detector will do that any other will null out and not hit on anything. miss my Tejon wanting another.

My Explorer and my F75 will also detect that target. That test isn't the deciding factor. Put the nail on the ground oustide of a 4" hole (or 1" down) and the coin in the hole. Depending on the orientation of the nail's axis, you may not hear the target.

the smoothest running machines in iron that i've used are the cibola and vaquero. I've used the tejon but it was too talkative for me since i'm not a relic hunter. I have actually dug a penny with a nail laying across it, disc was set just before nickel, and not a hint from my tone that there was iron near, totally disc'd out.

I use mine for beach hunting, and have poked around a little in the woods with it but not much. Anyone finding smaller silver coins like mercs or barber dimes deep with either of these machines?

Has anyone done a side by side comparison with someone using a minelab explorer/etrac/sov against the Tejon/Vaquero in actual hunting conditions? I know someone who has done a bunch of it with Explorer/XLT but have never seen any posts with tesoros and another machine.

Thank you,
Neil
