iron tool info

New member
I was wondering if anyone could tell me if this is civil war period. I am asking because I found this one about 2 years ago and my friend dug one up yesterday both came from fields that have produced many civil war items. Also if it has a certain name I know that it would only work on square nuts any info would be great. Thanks for your time and Happy Hunting. The tool measures 10 inches from tip to tip

Jeremiah, I have found a couple of these. Being an old farmboy, I have always considered them post CW and used on horse or mule drawn iron wheel hay mowers. I will quickly add that I am not an antique tool expert. Nice find anyay. Some of those old tools have value to collectors. HH.

I think it is a plow wrench. That general shape was made by at least a dozen different companies and was a popular tool for the local metal worker to make. They were easily lost which is why many have a hole drilled or cut in them to hang them from.

Some of the companies that made them were Deere, Chattanooga/IHC, Browne, and Moline. They are worth a lot more if the company name and patent date are visible.

Rip

The more I look at it the more I am convinced that it is an Oliver Plow Wrench. Many of these do not have a company name on them. They just have a model number like F239 which is what that one looks like it may be.

If you can find any markings on it, I may be able to give you some better idea of the company, and years it was made as well as an idea of value.

Rip

Back in the 60s bikes came with a little tool case at the back of the seat and had a tool like that in it.

At least the English bikes we got in Canada did.

Ours looked similar to #351 on this page: This is one URL!

But then it does look more like a farm wrench: Many dozens of wrenches here that look close to yours. You might find yours here.

If you look at that site and look at the photo for item 1403, it is an Oliver F239 which is what I think yours is.
