iron & the Explorer

why is it that iron effects the explorer so much?
Is it the power output of the machine? I used the sovereign in the same place that I am hunting now
and had no problems found lots of coins. Now
with the explorer II the iron over takes the machine
to the point that it almost seems worthless to try.
I tryed ferrous tones with no discrim but the coin
tones are skipped right over and all you hear is the iron and this is with fast on and going fairly slow sweep speed. I know there has got to be some silver
there as its 75 year old house and I found wheats.
I know the explorer has to be a better machine but
could it really be this bad in the iron trash.

I wanted to compare my Sovereign Elite to the Explorer in heavy iron just to make sure I was correct before I said anything. There was no difference so I then tested the two over different sizes of iron with a quarter touching the iron and at various distances from the iron.
Only the Explorer using Audio 1 with Ferrous sounds could give an indication that there was something next to the large piece of iron to the point that I would dig the target. It could not ID what it was but told me this was an iffy iron target and should be examined. The smaller the iron was the less difficult it was to indicate that the target should be examined but I don't think this makes much difference. It is the iffy iron sound that tells the user to dig the target and this is in conjunction with experience with the machine.
I moved the quarter away from the iron at various distances and when this was about the diameter of the coil there was a positive ID of both targets. This is one reason why I use an 8" coil in heavy trash and the stock coil for relic hunting or ground with less iron. There are many places where I would use a 5 or 6" coil on the Explorer, if I had one, such as in a yard with a lot of iron.
I think the major point is that my Explorer does the best and not the Sovereign. So I am not sure why you do better with the Sovereign other than experience. I like the Sovereign and use if often but in this particular application it is the Explorer that did the best for me.
A major factor is to sweep the coil and iffy sounding targets should be given a second look. Iron or coins will give a fairly constant sound if they are not co-located. The sound is constant enough that I am confident that one is a coin and the other is iron. I have often posted of the great finds I have from going after the iffy sounds. If I keep getting a higher tone mixed in with an iron sound then I will dig the target or see good digital reading mixed in with iorn readings.
I don't know of any detector that can ID co-located iron and silver or other coins any better than I can with the Explorer. All the ones I have used don't do as good or about the same as the Explorer.

Cody how important do you think having fast on is?
I like to run in quick start because you can switch
between digital and smart faster. but I usually
run in advanced so that I can have fast on but i find
I dig more trash with fast on. and the coin finds dont
increase I guess the deal is I have to become confident
with my setting which hasen't happened yet with the sovereign it was easy and I made alot of finds.
I think the coil could be alot of it I need an all pourpose coil as I don't really like the stock one.

I think you can work around FAST On with the sweep speed. I frankly don't pay much attention to it being ON or off. I think ferrous sounds and audio 1 is more of a help in iron. FAST may be more of a help when working in "non-ferrous" trash. I turn it on in heavy trash thinking that the faster recover is going to help when targets are close together. It will give a double hit on shallow targets so it does make a difference. I think more of using the coil to sweep a target from many directions as the best way and using the 8" coil than an electronic recovery of the threshold or sould after a hit. By working the coil and speed I feel like it will do more for me than depending on FAST being ON or OFF.
