Iron or not?

First like to say Hi to everyone, I've had my explorer xs for about a month now and am still learning so any help is appreciated.
Why do I get high tones and cross showing in top right corner only to find the object is iron?
On pinpoint the signal is spread out so I know it is probably iron (unlike a silver coin which in pin point gives strong signal in one small area), but I always dig just in case, only to be frustrated by lumps of iron!

Until you get use to the Explorer, I recommend turning 90 degrees and rechecking each and every "good" target. If the target disappears or checks in lower, move on. Yeah, it MIGHT be a good target, but the odds are heavily against it.
Another thing that is easy to do is to put too much effort into the Explorer XS. Honestly, if you are just getting started, don't mess with the iffy signals. Most coins will sound off cleanly, so there is really no need to spend too much effort looking for the harder ones until you are comfortable with the detector.
Finally, there is one sure fire way to defeat larger lumps of iron. Lift the coil about 8 inches. If you are still getting a good, clean signal, time to move on.

The fast setting seems to give more iron falses. If iron is a problem, try turning this off. Also, too high a sensitivity will turn nails into coins every time. Try changing from manual to auto, or go to a lower manual setting.

just bought explorer and nailshave a broken sound next to black. am getting so used to sounds i dont look at crosshairs any more if it sounds good dig it picked a minie ball at 10 inches with a nice clear sound. the broken ones usually turned out junk.
