Iron masking

After reading a post on here about someone using the 2 tone mode with no discrimination I decided to test that out.

Lo and behold, in my testing I did find that if I cranked discrimination, and you have a coin between a couple of iron nails (not all that uncommon around here) you do not get an audio signal on the coin. You may get a visual ID but it won't be consistent, maybe not enough to make you dig.
Backing off the discrimination allows you to pick up the coin. Now how to tell the coin signal from the iron? I believe like the poster here said, use the 2 tone mode is the answer. I think coming up with that one was sheer brilliance, don't know who did it, but my tests do show masking based on discrimination and this is a way around that for the types of areas we have around here.

In most cases when using discrimination, and passing over an accepted target at the same time the loop is over a rejected target, masking will occur on the accepted target.

The faster the circuit recovery speed becomes the less an annoyance this is. What happens in a nut shell is your asking the detector to shut out on the rejected target, and the same time asking to report on the good one. It doesn't know whether to Sx@t or go blind, so it goes silent.

On the T-2 the numbers try to read up. Using the 1, or 2 tone audio also puts the ID reading on a real time mode. It reads instant. Using the other audio tones, and the ID takes an average, and reports it.

Have a nice day

Thanks for the explanation on that it is helpful to know. It really does appear in those areas without a lot of surface trash and deep goodies mixed with rusty iron that 0 discrimination in 2 tone mode is a winner to help pick the goodies out. In my testing I found even a discrimination of 10 was enough to mask, so using none is pretty much a must.

Thanks for clarifying that!

Hello Lillo,

I believe I was the one sharing the 2 Tone mode zero discrimination setup below, Your post supports the 2 tone zero discrimination setup is best used when searching areas laced with iron.

Fore relic hunting or sites laced with iron, You can use a 3 or 4 tone setup even the new added upgrade audio feature but I would not recommend it, When searching in an area extremely full of iron the user should simplify his tactic and stick with the 2-tone feature with zero discrimination. Now the user just has two tones to worry about which will help them focus even better with capturing masked targets. Increasing the discrimination will increase the iron masking as you have experienced and increasing the amount of tones is very annoying with the abundance of signals.

However, Just because you can now get those targets masked by iron doesn't mean the target id or audio id will remain the same. Many times iron does interfere with target id even though the audio will be there, The id may be lower due to an averaging so if you're searching an iron laced site, a dime signal may id much lower which is why it's important to dig all positive signals above the iron tone at these older sites.

Sorry about rambling on here, But yes the 2 tone audio feature with zero discrimination is the best setup for sites laced with iron.

Hi Paul,

Great post, it got me to thinking and opened my eyes, and made me do tests to confirm what you found.

Brilliant post I think. My tests do show you are very correct and yes I did see a lower id indication as well. That's acceptable as you are looking mostly for audio signals as to whether to dig in these cases I feel. The key that you pointed out I believe is that unless you use no discrimination, the target will be masked and you won't hear a thing, at least nothing you would dig, no matter the id that shows.

So I really want to thank you as well for bringing that up. I mean there is no telling how many good targets a person could leave behind using discrimination in these sites with all the iron junk.
