Iron mask

Slightly confused. Have heard its better to search trashy sites in Iron mask. Can this be explained, why is this better than disc. Seems like Xing out tabs, tops etc would be xplorer advantage. After hitting iron mask and hitting detect it takes you to smartfind screen is this considered iron mask I believe it is? Also there was so much talk of being able to hunt, hunted out places because of the depth, now seems like you have to have a smaller coil to do this. I guess I just want the best setup possible but not just because. On my last detector started w/ small coil and was told to increase size. Ps thanks Jim @ upstate slowing down really helped. Can anyone help ID a Crossed cannon pin or button with a D below them. Also any token experts out there please email me. Thanks Brian

Brian,
I use the iron mask where ther is more than normal iron like rusty nails and old bottle caps as they will mask a good target. In areas that are loaded with pulltabs i will use one of my disc patterns.
The iron mask button is pushed once and you will be in the iron mask setting mode where you set it to what you want ( I run -9)and hit it again and you are in iron mask mode and if you hit it again you will be in your disc mode and Iron mask is off. I will run sometime in iron mask and when the area is very trashy I will push the iron mask buttom and go to one of my disc patterns I set up with the top opened up to where My iron mask would have been and the rest blacked out other than the nickle.

Howdy; I hope Jim or someone will correct me if I am wrong. But Your custom coin screens are the same as Iron mask, except they are shaped different. In other words, you are using iron mask when you have a custom screen. Except the iron mask is any part of your screen blacked out, plus what other part of the screen, not only iron, but other metals as well. I hope if I am wrong, someone will let me know.

I have also been making the same assumption. The iron mask is just a portion of a total discrimination pattern that blocks out nonferrous areas in addition to the "iron mask" ferrous area.

Basicly I beleive you are correct, but remember the more black on the screen the more iron mask you have and the more iron you will reject and the more you reject the harder it will be to hear a coin beside it . I also notice this will affect the depth too and you can try it yourself when you are at a area where there is a lot of nulling with iron, put down a coin in a area that nulls and try the quickstart mode and see how high above the coin you will get and still get a signal, now go to iron mask at a -9 and see how high over the coin you can get and still get a decent signal. Try this with a nail beside it in the quick start and iron mask and sweep the coil over it and see that with the iron mask at a -9 you will hear the audio with no problem ,but in quick start it may be alot harder to hear( I call it a deeper null and harder to hear a good target). From this I decided to build a pattern with the top of my screen to look like my iron mask at a -9 would look like with the lower area blacked out other than a small area for nickles that I use in heavy pulltab areas.
I am no expert as I am also learning, but have notice a few thing that seem to work for me.
