Iron Mask

I bought my Explorer late this summer and used the factory presets to hunt at first. The park I was hunting is full of junk and has been hunted by everyone who ever owned a detector in this town, so I turned the iron mask down to zero and found quite a few wheaties, a seated dime, a liberty dime and 6 indian heads. All the silver I found was in the upper right hand corner and the pennies were found in the upper third of the screen. Most posts I see use -8 as their iron mask setting. What I want to know is what am I missing by keeping it at zero since I did so well in the first place.
Thanks and HH. Can't wait till spring.

I don't think you're missing anything. If you can stand all the audio signals in this mode in the locations that you hunt then keep it up. It sure beats adding excessive disc (even iron mask).
Keep up the good work ... Gord.

Should be fine at zero as long as theres not lots of iron around, setting it lower helps it rover faster in iron. Parks without much iron a setting of zero will do fine....Jim

Now I'm confused....I thought a setting of zero is the maximum iron rejection and it should be used when there IS a lot of iron. -Dave

Tom, setting Iron Mask to 0 should be fine for coins, but for small gold rings, you could miss some. I have found some that come in just left of the center of the screen all the way at the bottom. HH

0 setting is the most iron rejection, -16 is wide open accept all....I run around -9 -10 in high iron, sometimes even less.. a minus number is less than zero, so the higher the minus the more you accept

Ooooppsss - I should read these messages more carefully ... I thought the original message meant he had zero iron mask (that is, it was set at -16). So my answer related to that. He might well miss good targets if he hunts with iron mask set at 0.
Sorry for the confusion ... Gord.

That's what I thought but in your previous post you say to use 0 as long as there's NOT a lot of iron around. Didn't you mean to say use 0 when there IS a lot of iron around so it can be rejected?

no the more iron the less iron mask you should use, at least to a point, you still reject most iron with a setting of -9 but it allows the exp to see the good targets in the iron easier, if you used 0 or full iron mask you can mask out some of those targets.. I wish they had used zero as the lowest setting instead of -16, would make it easier to exoplain

Thanks for your responses guys and I'm sorry for the confusion. By Zero I do mean that i blank out all of iron mask because of the high iron in the park I hunt. And since most ot you seem to hunt in -8 or -9 I thought I was missing some important stuff. Although from my finds I didn't think so. I did not find any large cents or 2 cent pieces or anything odd like that and they should be there. Would I miss those types of coins because i blanked out all iron mask?
Thanks for your help.
Tom

Sorry to join in so late - only very recently considered getting an Explorer.
Jim - if less iron mask is better on irony sites then why not always run with less iron mask? In other words, if there's the risk of masking out a good find with iron mask 0, why ever set it to zero.
Hope that makes sense
