Does The iron mask setting have any affect when hunting in descrimination mode or do both modes work independently.

Basically they are separate ... that is ..either one or the other modes.
However, you can make the disc mode operate similar to the iron mask (IM) mode just by put a disc pattern on the left which looks like the equivalent IM mode.
The advantage of the latter mode of operation is that you can also add disc if you get, for example, some trash which you want to eliminate. You can't do that in IM mode proper.
