Iron mask question.:pulltab:

What is a good setting when wanting most iron to be rejected? Factory presets are like -5. Does iron mask discrim work when you have it turned off when regular detecting, or just work when its turned on? Im new at this sorry.

No, the iron mask doesn't work if you have it turned off, if off then the program
screen is activated.
If you have the XS, I think the factory preset is -6 on iron mask.
If you want to knockout most small iron, -12 should do that.
In fact -12 should just about knock out all iron items except
for iron bottle caps and maybe some big iron that could bleed thru.
If you have gained some experience with the Explorer at -5 or -6 and
want to lower that setting then -12 or so could be a good starting point.
If you have wet ground -15 to -14 will allow some nails to chirp.
-13 seems to cut out most of those chirps in wet ground.
This goes for the XS in my conditions, I don't know about the other Explorer models.

Yes, that is correct.
If you want to take out more iron, the lower numbers
will do that.
Or you can use a program and take out more iron and
non-ferrous items as well.
The darkened area on the screen represents disced out
sections and the audio will not be reported if the cursor falls
in those sections.
I thought your original question was about where iron
would be disced out thus my first reply.

if you wanted to totally knock out iron on the xs like the sovereign does how much of the screen would you black out. thanks

I haven't used a Sov but I think the Sov is more aggressive with its
iron mask than the Explorers.
If I had to venture a guess, I would suppose setting the iron mask
on the Explorer at its lowest IM number, that should darken about the half left
of the screen.
With this setting, about the only audio coming from iron will likely be a few
nail chirps, iron bottle caps (which show up on the screen on the far right bottom of the screen)
and perhaps from time to time a few very large iron pieces that register as non-ferrous.
Personally I would not run with that much iron mask but to each his own.
Maybe someone who has experience on both Explorer and Sov can give a better
answer than mine but I think it will be hard to compare the 2 because they are
different.

from you other post i assumed you could darkened the screen to a point that all iron was rejected like on the sovereign since you can do it to reject all non-ferrous targets. i have one area with a lot of iron that i found a lot of old coins in with the sovereign. i have found 2 barber dimes with the explorer xs but just thought i might get more with total iron mask. thanks.

Tried to send you a PM but your still ineligible to receive one ......... So ......

I can relate to what you are going through trying to learn the Minelab ...:stars:. I traded for an XS last deer season and I'm just starting to see a little daylight on understanding the beast ...... . Have you checked out Mike Moutray's screens yet ? Or downloaded the emulator for the Explorer XS and II ? If you haven't , post your email address here and I'll send the web addresses to you and some other info that will help you speed up your education .... Bill
We newbies have got to stick together

You could use a program to knock out almost all iron.
I am trying to think which would be better for the purpose,
either jewelry or coin program.
Probably either one, let's say try the coin prog.
Go to select and push clear then scroll down the list
and put a check mark by coins.
Next scroll to you see crowncap and select it with the
"X".
This should knock out any good sounding iron.
Note: make sure the iron mask is turned off so the
program will running on the screen.
Since you have used the Sov, you might want to try
audio1 since it widens the audio response which might
make it easier for you to learn good vs bad signals.
At first audio 1 can be somewhat overwhelming but
it might be easier for you.
For sure try it in your yard over good and bad objects
to see how it sounds and if it is something you want
to consider using, I recommend you use iron mask
with audio 1, say at about 12 to see what you think.
Then there is the ferrous sounds selection which will
make everything on the left side of the screen a lower
tone while making everything as it registers toward the
right side of the screen a higher tone.
There are a lot of people that use ferrous sounds so
it can be considered.

Let me get this straight! I have an XS! The lower the IM number -6 will this discriminate out more iron/ferrous or the higher # -15 etc. will dis. out more or less iron? I just use presets and adjust from there. what am i doing wrong or am I just dumb. But an UWis. engineer.
Thanks

have the xs but have a lot to learn on it. the way i understand is the more you black out the more you discriminate.
