Iron Mask "Act 1000"

I know that so many questions have been asked on this subject, but I dont seem to grasp the concept. Please bear with me!! When I hunt in iron mask (-:geek:, that means that the ability of iron to hide a good target is reduced or totally cut, right? What happens when the iron mask is turned off? Does that mean that I miss good targets because iron is masking good targets?
If I put a dime with a piece of iron, say half " apart, and can't pick up the coin, just the nulling, what am I doing wrong? Basicly 2 questions.
Appreciate the input of the patient "teachers".

This is a tough one for me to explain, but the way i look at it is the more black you see on the screen the faster it will null out anything and the deeper the null will be with iron and for it to recopperate from the null the further to the right it has to go before you get a signal. In another words the black area is masking the good target that was close to iron that you wont hear a audio signal from. Now when you run the iron mask more to the off (very little black on the screen) it will see more iron object that are not mask by the iron mask and any good target that is close to it will respond with a signal that may be higher than iron and by working the signal you will find the coin beside the iron. Now if the iron is big enought you will not hear it at all, but most are rusty nails that are close to the coins and those will mask it if the iron mask was run to high and some have found that a -8 or so will do the best.
Take a dime and put a rusty nail with about a inch or 2 from it and try going over it with the iron mask at a -8 and then try a disc pattern and see if you can see a big difference in the signals. also notice that the crosshairs may not show coin, but the tones do. If you use a large piece of iron it may not work, but a rusty nail like you would find while detecting is the best.
Maybe someone else can explain it beter, but I do know it works as most of my coins have been close to iron or in the same hole as iron and even shows iron on the crosshairs, but the tone were sweet.

Here is a test that I did about a year ago. I hope this helps.
I have been wondering about target masking and how Jim Upstate was making so many good finds so I decided to do a test. I found a place on the ground where there was no signal. I had my discrimination screen on and I placed a Merc dime there and swung the coil over it and it gave a good signal. I then picked up the Merc and placed two 16d nails in the same place and the Explorer nulled over the nails. I then placed the Merc between the nails and the Explorer still nulled. I swung the coil over the nails and Merc fom every direction and got nothing but a null. Thinking about how Jim Upstate sets his machine I switched over to Iron mask and set it at -10. I swung the coil over the nails and the Merc and the Merc sung out with the high pitched silver tone. Then I picked up the Merc and swung the coil over the two nails and the Explore nulled or every once in a while gave and iron false from one direction. I placed the Merc back between the nails and the Explorer was giving the High tone again. The crosshairs did not go to the upper right like they normally do, they jumped across the top from the middle to the left but were in the middle enough to make me want to dig the target. This test really was a surprise to me because I have been hunting in the descrimination screen and not using Iron mask at all. I will be going over areas that I have already hunted to see if I can find anything that I may have missed. I hope this helps someone else also. Thanks Jim Upstate for posting your settings and thanks to all you guys who post settings and tips and any other help that gets posted here. Also a big thank you to Guvner for making this forum possible. HH Butch
