Iron mask 16

Big Boys Hobbies

Well-known member
Well I learned something today. I have always hunted in Iron mask 10 to avoid iron/descrim it out until today. I have read that alot of guys hunt wide open to hear the good stuff right by the bad but it has always drove me crazy to all the "noise" you pick up when you run it. I have hunted around our barn several times in IM 10 but today I made myself run wide open. I dug a 1975 quarter and 2 pennies right beside iron that Ive went over several times before. I know its no pirate treasure but it did open my mind up to all the things i have missed due to my inexperience.

It drove me nuts till i dug up that quarter. The coins really sing out despite the trash beside them. A finely tuned ear can hear them easily.

Guess I should have listened to the "pros" around here sooner.

Thanks and HH

Actually for some sites with -10 one can do fairly well, I think Mike M runs his about there and it is according to whether one uses ferrous or conduct tones, personally I use conduct so I use a minimal amount of disc, say -15, never anymore than -14(unless I am doing a clad hunt) and I always have one screen cleared(iron mask or program screen), that way if I have a signal that breaks thru occasionally then I can switch to the cleared screen and make a better judgment on whether to further investigate. I read too where there seems to be a good many ferrous sound users that use a small amount of disc also. I have tried the ferrous sound with clear screen and it is not my cup of tea, I want to hear signals based on conductivity, that is my preference so a small amount of disc is usually easier on the ears, nothing wrong with using the -16 full time though and you get a better picture of everything that is in the ground under the coil, which is important.

I have hunted in IM 10 from about day 1 of using my EX II and done in my opinion very well considering. I have went over this same ground i found the coins in today several times in IM 10 and "thought" i had cleaned it out. I ran IM 16/wide open and found 3 coins next to right next to trash i never even got a beep on. I know there are many human/machine variables but the point is i found 3 new coins in ground that I have been over and over again. They stuck out like a sore (insert your favorite noun here) in IM 16 where they didn't in IM 10. How many other coins have i missed in IM 10????

Yes I run ferrous sounds...haha

Silver just screams dig me, dig me in ferrous!!!

thanks for the reply,
HH

Sure its noiser in -16 but usually produces more coins next to iron trash..Do remember some areas just too trashy and may have to go to-10 or lower....

Much improvement over the stock clunker. Considerable less weight, runs smoother and in high trash its almost silly not to use it. I'm not sure since the Ex is so deep anyway you lose much depth at all. I still find targets 10 plus "

The site was literally awash with nails, melted solder, pipes of all metals, old edison lightbulb bases, strewn over almost an acre. A couple friends went over it heavily with 3 other famous machines, and I later went back with an old Ex. XS with a 5 inch Sunray, hunting in IM -16, and pulled 9 barber dimes, and more than twenty silver dimes and quarters out of there, even with all the grunting noises, the silver "tinkle sound" would come through the iron grunts simultaneously, if I had chosen IM- 15 or less those silver signals would have been lost due to the fact that if you silence the iron, the other adjacent signals get lost in the null. The new SE is even better, it's faster recovery and tone hold is plainly more of a good thing. Until you experience such a site, it's hard to describe the difference to someone who has been field hunting mostly.

Just my two large cents worth of info.

I do hunting around old homesteads also, in fact a lot and I agree with you about the 5" coil. It's great for getting those signals in super trashy areas that the larger coils just won't get the signals.

Hey Stoops,

I think you'll find that the more you use -16 the better it gets. You'll learn to tune out the tones you're not listening for. I'd also be willing to bet that if you worked your way down in coil size (10.5", 8", and 5")you'll still find some goodies you missed.

Paul (forum name, OLD California) started me off on using -16 Ferrous and I've never looked back. Paul's a big believer in hearing everything under the coil. It just takes some time getting use to all that noise :).

I use the sunray x-8. Is the 5 that much different than the 8, that is if you have tried both.

Thanks, HH Stoops

Since your hunting wide open, does the faster recovery of the SE even come into effect since your not nulling the EX II with descriminated targets???

Well because of your post I am going to try running wide open today and see if I can find me some silver or smash my SE around a tree, pull out all my hair and then run around naked screaming that Rudolph song "silver and gold" or maybe I'll put it back in discr saved modes and go back to wondering what I'm missing. I will let u know how it goes later.:throw:
