Iron in the soil, filter setting & sweep speed ,DX-1 probe

I posted these on another forum and wanted to see if anyone had some guidance

I am having a rough time with the V3i. There are times when I am in pin point mode (using the DX-1 and V3i) and I will not get any audio, but the bars will move. I find a target with the V3i. I lay the V3i down and switch the to the probe, pull the triggre. I hear the threshold and then go to the hole and the threshold goes blank.
What is the process for using the Probe? I never had a problem with this on my DFX.
It is quite frequently and really annoying.
The same thing happens with just the V3i. Find a target, move to the side (far aside) pull trigger, wait for threshold and themn move the V3i towards the target, it will go quite but the bars move. If I keep the trigger pulled I can walk around with the bars moving and no sound.
I rarely find anything over 3" deep unless it very large. I sure its something I have set or doing wrong but I am at my breaking point

My settings tonight were
Tried all freq
RX 4, AM 78, Disc 84
Reject -95 to -89, +95
Acc -88 to 94 (tones from -88 to -10 are set to 5)
Filter tried are 5, 7.5 & 10 BP
Recovery 56
BC & HR off

I constanly have the "rattle" sound, I understand the I have it set that way but is the soil just made of iron? This is the same at the beach in the wet sand.

I have reset all the programs back to factory and run factory programs (this was at the beach last time) and I put a quarter down 3" and using the beach program it didn't see the quarter unless I put it to 5band filter and it still wasn't a clear VDI.

When I do the ground balance I rarly get a nice smooth threshold it usually has a scratchy sound.

The past 2 times out with a friend with a high end ML detector has found a large 1 cent coin while I am only finding pennies in the top 3 inches. And these are the locations I find (need to stop bring him)

Yesterday the V3i is constantly "rattling snakeing" I have VDI -88 to -10 set to 5. I have tried the filters, 10 band seems to be slightly better (not much) I think 5 band is getting deeper but only if I swing it fast but from what I read I am supposed to swing slow.
Is there a better setting to use? If I rejected the VDI's the threshold would still null so either way I on't think I can find anything around this area. I'm just wondering how my friends metal detector is finding things in the same soil. His detector shouldn't be any better; it has to be something in the V3i settings. I have tried a slow sweep and fast.

I'm not sure if I am posting a question or just rambling because I don't know what the #$@% I'm doing.
Do I have to dig everything, the VDI's are -70 to -40 and get the "rattle snake" sound, so I can see if there is something really there or if something might be hidden underneath?

In this area I pulled several pennies (1 wheat about 4inches, best depth yet), a 1970ish 50 cent pieces (1.5 inches deep) and a lot of junk (I was sure it was but didn't want to take a chance). My friend (not any longer) with the "other" detector found 1836 large cent, a standing liberty (date ?) and an 1882 Indian head. You can see why I am getting frustrated. He has only had it 2 weeks so he is not a expert with his. I

My first guess is maybe a bad coil, do you have a dealer or another user nearby to help you? Can you swap coils? All I can say is it sounds like you have a problem somewhere which is really hard to diagnose without seeing what is going on. Another option is to get it to a service center and have it looked at to make sure it is not the detector. Reloading the programs from the library back to stock might be a good first step too.

The no audio PP has been a hot topic and here is one of a couple: http://www.findmall.com/read.php?66,1442368

My process for using the DX1 is as follows:

I pinpoint the target with the V3i.
I then lay the detector down.
I flip the DX1 switch.
I touch the DX1 to the ground and pull the trigger to reestablish the threshold.
I flip trigger forward to lock the DX1 in pinpoint mode and stop the detector tracking. This works for me because I have analysis mode (trigger forward) set to pinpoint meter.

You said,
I constanly have the "rattle" sound, I understand the I have it set that way but is the soil just made of iron?

answer Here in Illinois it is.

Wish I could see your detector and setup in person. If after 2 years you are doing something wrong or have faulty equipment if 4" is the deepest you can get. By the way were are you doing this detecting? (part of the country)

Hi,
Pennsylvaina, near philadelphia. I am going to setup the V3i for the forward trigger to lock in PP. I have it now for polar plot.

So if you have a lot of iron what settings do you use to counter that. Also what filter setting? I seem go get better depth with the 5 band but seemed to sound off better on a good target if swing fast.

PA is known for soil with iron. If you don't want to here the Geiger counter sound, why not just set the iron range to 0 tone.

I see you had a PA detector answer you on your other post. He seems to agree with me about your soil. He also says they are doing really well with their V's. I'd hook up with them if possible and check out setups.

I think you MAY have an intermittant In the coil or connector.

If not a bad coil connection , MAYBE Iron near the target /coil.

Please let us know.
