Iron discrimination

I see that several of the higher end BH have three levels of iron discrimination. What is that and how does it work?

Thanks

Mark

I believe We have the same machines . The 2200. Have you ever tested it on a very small gold ring or gold ear ring. It will eliminate them when Iron is notched out. Its a digital readout, We do not have a dial to set the discrimination to an exact point. It is either hunting in all metal or notch out iron and whatever falls into that group..
Well the 3 other levels in the iron category gives you a more precise choice of what items to eliminate.I use my pioneer 202 when Im looking for rings ,it has a dial for discrimination. I can set it where I like. I use a very small gold ring to set it,
I am thinking of getting the 3300 just for that reason ,its breaks items(targets) down into 11 categories instead of 7.

Good Luck

The 3 level iron discrimination works something like this...As you turn up the DISC from about fully CCW to about the 10 o'clock position, you first accept all metals, then you DISC out small iron objects such as nails, then medium iron objects such as a screw driver, then large iron objects, like a hammer or horse shoe...Some iron is still gonna get through, especially rusty large peices...But this is your 3 level iron discrimination...If you continue to turn up the DISC, you then loose nickels, foil, and small gold, then medium gold, lead, screw caps, then pull tops and large gold, then lead, zinc, brass and coppers, you usually cannot DISC out Silver or coins...

HH,

Ok, thanks guys. So if I want to detect gold jewelry with my Elite 2200, I have to not discriminate iron, since the Elite 2200 has a large "notch" for iron that also will discriminate out gold. Is that about right? I have seen on less expensive BH machines, the discriminate knob that gives infinite adjustment of discrimination. My BH Jr. has that also. This makes me think that the Elite 2200 is basically a copper and silver coin machine and if a person wanted to go after gold coins and discriminate out much iron, a different machine would be needed. Does that accurately summarize the situation?

Thanks

You have it pretty well understood...I am not into the digital machines...I will keep my old White's Classic forever, or until she gives up the tone (ghost)...I have much more control over my machine this way...I like knobs...buttons confuse me...If you want to go after Gold exclusively, I would sugest a better machine...A tesoro Cibola, White's Classic III, or a machine with VDI # readout...

HH,

It's not that I want a gold machine, I just don't want to be passing over pieces of eight when I am out in the field digging clad.

I say no ,no ,no

.The 2200 will pick up gold rings(items) wt no problem. It does take out SMALL gold items when you notch out iron. You should test it with a few different size rings. You have to have a very small(kid) sized ring and thin, b4 it will eliminate it.Or an ear ring. Its really not all that bad. Put a gold coin under it ,,,,or a medium sized gold ring and it will blow ur ear drums out.LOL

Good Luck

There is not one magical place that all gold will read on any machine. In other words, you cant notch up to "X" amount on any machine and still expect to get all gold, especially at depth. Unfortunately "gold escudos" is not an option on your digital readout so it will land somewhere between crap and garbage. Pieces of eight are silver and would make themselves easily known. Some machines are hotter on gold while at the same time good coinshooters. The Tesoro's are very hot on gold and still decent coin shooters. Whites MXT and Minelab X-terras are also hot on gold just to name a few. Again, no magical amount of disc on any of these machines to only find gold. Find a user of any of these 3 brands that isn't digging pulltabs and they will be the same one still looking for their first gold (anything). Not saying your BH wouldn't find it though. JJ
