Hello everybody! I'm a recent graduate (2nd degree; I went back to school as an adult), geology with a minor in physics, and still looking for a job. Let's see, what else.. I design and build motorcycles as a hobby. I call it a hobby, but it's more of an addiction, and I ride year-round. I joined this forum recently, as I'm new to metal detecting. Technically, I'm not even new to the hobby yet, because I don't have a detector.. so I'm aspiring to be new to the hobby! I've spent a lot of time reading up on various models. I'm looking to buy a better unit to start with, but one that is fairly intuitive to learn. I'm very technically/mechanically inclined, so learning a more advanced machine is not a concern. I've been looking at the Technetics/Fisher T2/F75, XP Deus, White's TDI or Spectra V3, Minelab E TRAC. I'm also considering the Garrett AT Pro. I'm trying to stick to $500-600, so I'm watching sources for a used T2/F75 or Deus, both of which I've seen sell in that range. The TDI, V3 and E TRAC aren't coming down that far, so they're sort of out, but I'm still watching sources for them just in case I see one for a great price. The AT Pro is significantly cheaper than the rest of these, but I'd still buy it if I found a used one for a good price. I've read great things about it, and I think it would make a great second machine for my wife or bringing along another person. So that's where I am right now.

Welcome! Did you go to the School of Mines out in SD?
We were all where you are regarding this fascinating Sport....I started out 5yrs ago quite late in Life, always interested and love to be outside...walked into a local dealer, and left with an F70! That thing has made me a ton of money, then I got an AtPro back in 2012, which also made me a ton of money...My Wife of 35yrs has never seen so much jewelry coming out of me in her whole life that she has in the past 5yrs!

The F70 I use on the dirt, the Pro is my beach and water rig, they both use the same batteries and seem to get along nicely....let the brothers know where you are at in the world and what you intend to hunt...some like old silver coins, some like to wade for gold etc...that AtPro is a good choice for a starter, or heck, even a main sweeper!...Lots of experienced guys got one and are killing it in all genres...(except salt, it would work, but not quite the main strength of it)

Back in my former life, I hung around with Perewitz, Trotta, Fuller et.al. Theres some great people here that share your passions, (Bikes, Rocks, Metal) and will help you along the way if you need it.....try to avoid getting a job if you can..they are often a temporary and unprofitable nuisance for a guy with mad skills!...:beers: .

Thanks for stopping to say hello!

I went to school at East Carolina University. I'm currently still in eastern NC, but am applying to jobs all over the country, and would actually love to leave the country for at least a time.

For now, I'd love to hunt anything. I'm not really a collector (well I do collect minerals), so anything I dig up would likely be sold or given away.

Avoiding having a job isn't really feasible for me, though I would LOVE to be able to spend all my time on my invention ideas. Too much school loan debt (because education in this country is ridiculously expensive), and many hobbies that I love too much. Motorcycling, building, tinkering, cars, traveling, kayaking, backpacking, food, exploring, archery, electronics, chemistry. Actually, I am a collector. I collect abilities. When I need something done, I'll usually learn how to do it, and then do some out-of-the-box things with the knowledge. Such as, when I was 8, I disassembled a sony walkman and built a remote-control car from its parts.
