Interesting way to soften iron volume

If you hunt in heavy iron you might want to try this.

I was hunting today and using a variety of programs. I used a program (with the 6X10) that had the same basic settings as my "base" program, but for some reason the 5 tone on the iron was so soft, I mean like 50% softer! I checked the audio volume, discrimination, sensitivity, recovery delay, filters, etc. but couldn't see a real difference. I made sure to set the sensitivity exactly the same (other settings were now exactly the same after matching the recovery delay), but it made no difference. One program was still around 50% quieter in the iron than my own.

The last thing I looked at - Both programs were using modulation. My "base" program was set at 2 and the other program was set at 3. I really doubted it could be this and almost didn't test it, but had to try. I started switching my "base" program from 2 to 3 a few times to really check and it was clear. It's hard to believe but the iron volume was about cut in half. I didn't dig any coins but did dig some aluminum around 4" down and it didn't make a difference in the target sound level. It only made a difference in the Iron sound. Anyway, if the iron is thick, I doubt I'll be digging coins past 7" or so, so I'm not worried about losing a deep softie if that is even possible the way modulation on the V3i appears to work at 2 (and maybe 3). But anyone can check the modulation settings in their coin garden and post it back here. I would appreciate it.

Now, this gets back to what CyberSage said about modulation quieting deep iron (and maybe hot rocks too I think he said). But a setting of 3 seemed to just plain soften iron in general. I know from running modulation at 2 that deep iron often (not always) gives a very soft hit.

I really doubt if a setting of 3 will be true modulation - meaning deeper coins will soften in audio. (Modulation goes to 6 for starters). It is clear that a modulation setting of 2 is not what one would think it should be if one is familiar with modulation on ANY OTHER machine. I can say for certain, after digging many mid level (6" or so) coins, that a modulation level of 2 made NO DIFFERENCE in the audio level of the coins - they were not softer in volume. I can hit a 9" Nickel in my coin garden and it IS NOT at all softer with modulation at 2.

My intention here is not to say this works for me. I'd like to see if others can test this out as well. My soil is low in mineralization (1%), but is at -91 in iron mineralization. I was running Rx at 10-12 and Disc at 90-95. The recovery delay was tried at 20 to 42. Filter 5 band. There was some EMI, but not too bad.

Something to try...
