Interesting Tips from Ralph at Sun Ray

I was able to talk with Ralph at Sun Ray for about an hour today. Let me say right off that they are real nice folks and very knowledgeable. They are the type of people I like to know and be associated with. Here is a great tip he shared. The advanced mode can be used to make changes then switch back to Quickstart and the changes are maintained. What this does is allow the user to switch from Digital to the Smartfind screen and not go through Learn and Edit which is what happens if we stay in Advanced. I have wondered many times why it is necessary to step through Learn and Edit when going from Digital to the Smartfind screen in advanced so here is how to get around that.

Hear is another one that is very interesting where manual and semi-auto sensitivity is concerned. I missed this in my testing between the two but when testing on an ultra deep target if in manual and checking the target in semi-auto we need to pull the coil away from the target and give the detector a few seconds to make the switch then the detection depth will be the same. I have been switching to semi-auto and sweeping over the target to see if it could hit the target as deep as manual and not waiting for the switch. I am going to give this a try and see what happens as I do like the solid operation of semi-auto and Minelab is sure firm about this being the way to go.

Have a good one,

Cody,

That's interesting to hear you say that, on the Advanced/Quickstart mode. As a fairly new Explorer II user, I discovered that almost immediately and have been doing that since about day two. I've read all your posts and have frankly been in awe of your knowledge and insight into the machine. So I'm a little tickled to have figured that one out on my own. :) I switch back and forth from Digital to Smartfind on almost all targets, to comapre...unless I'm digging a bunch of miniballs or something like that...so that's a really useful feature to me.

As for the "switching time", I have done the Manual/Auto switch testing as well and was also not aware of that. Good to know...

It made me stop and think of how easy it is to think inside of a box. I have gone through edit and learn hundreds of times and did not think of making changes in advanced and switching back. After a while it got locked in that you hunt in one or the other and I did not realize it had happened.

Ralph has some really interesting tips and experiences with Minelab detectors. I was trying to recall my first one and could not get it to the exact date. I guess I have tried most of them at some point in time. Sun Ray has a lot of the kind of gear that is good for the hobby and I have always admired a person that sees a need and steps up to the plate. I think I am going to test some of there coils and will post the results. I had one of the first one years ago and also one of the first Explorers but was working day and night and did not get to really use one and see what they would do. I retired in 2000 so started to look at the top brands and really like the Explorer and Sovereign. The right tool for the job makes all the difference in the world. A good detector, probe, and headphone are an absolute must in my opinion. After that I want a Swingy Thingy and good damp soil that has never been hunted on a nice cool day. Ok, how about not hunted out?

I'm with you Cody on the damp soil. Not a drop here since early June. I still do not use headphones. What am I missing?

Amen to all that.

One of my favorite combos was the Sovereign Elite, Sunray S-12, and Gray Ghost phones. I only got rid of it because I decided that since the Sovereign was going to be my primary beach machine, I wanted the Excal instead...too paranoid about dropping it in the water. I managed not to for 2 summers, but now have a little more peace of mind. And the Explorer II for my land hunting, which I look forward to getting back to in the fall.
