Interesting Observation this morning.....

Early this morning I Observed a Guy detecting a large field..... I stopped and watched him detect for awhile.

I noticed he had a 5" coil....and was swinging it about 12" above the ground.......... I wondered why?. I asked..he said he just got the detector last week, and on the forums everyone said use small coil for less junk and better finds.........

I pointed out that though he could detect that large field with the 5" coil..it would take forever and he would most likely miss a good portion while swinging the little coil Helter Skelter like he was.

I explained they meant the small coil worked better in smaller areas that had lots of junk which allowed you to see good targets between the junk items......

He put the 11" coil on, and was a little happier knowing he would be OK in the large field with the Large coil...I showed him how to overlap and keep coil low & level with the ground..

I guess we need to be more specific with our posts for all the people who buy via the Internet and really have no clue how to use the metal detectors .........

PS: While I watched he found his first Clad Quarter.............. about 4" Down in hard packed dirt ( Very dry here)....... he asked if it was always this hard to dig LOL hahahahahhahha...

Some things are not easy to learn from reading and experimenting. I believe there is a lot of superstitious assumptions in how many of us hunt. To some extent getting a new unit is one. We read so & so bought a latest and greatest from x mfg. and found gold in a 'worked out' location. Now we start thinking about all the treasure we walked over with our old MD. OK so it costs $1k or so, if I find some better finds its worth it, right? Maybe but learning what we already use better or even going back over old ground with 6 months improved experience could well produce better than doing it with an even superior machine that we are still learning, eh? Another is settings, John used 3 tone and found a double eagle, I have been using delta no wonder I haven't gotten any gold coins in the tot-lots I have been hunting!
Also those of us who are self taught might miss learning things like good ground balancing skills or sometimes that one even needs to GB at all for best hunting.
Bottom line, mentoring newbies is really needed. I am ever so glad I started attending club meetings at the start of MD career. Almost everyone could benefit from being a part of a club. IMHO

Strength in numbers!

That was nice of you Elton , good guy

Thank you Elton for taking the time out to help a new treasure hunter.

Nice way to help the guy out !

What detector was he using, and how were his proper target recovery skills ?

He has a Used T2 Dave......... Said he got it through the Internet. Had 11 and 5" coils. Looked like a new machine..so he got a good deal for 400 he said he spent.

Hard to tell about digging. Ground was like a rock, so he pretty much chipped away till he hit the quarter. I did tell him to try and hinge a plug if possible.. A Nice young man... Had a good attitude. He just didn't know how to detect properly........... and didn't understand about coil usage..

Elton I wish you could have helped me when i started i would have learned much faster . and if you dont have a forum a guy can be in a badd way good thing the findmall is hear
