Interesting Nokta test and discovered something....

Placed a Dime about ¼" from the middle of a pull tab. Dime by itself was coming up at '85' solid. Pull tab alone came up at 62-66 depending on the coil direction...

Sen = 85; Mask = 10; Mode = DI3; 5" coil.

swinging the 5" coil lengthwise both ways gave me a mixed signal with the numbers occasionally climbing up to the 80s.

When swinging the coil at a good 90 deg, I could get lots more high tones while moving the coil away from the Dime it eventually gave me a solid '82' on the screen. So by isolating the Dime I was able to get a diggable signal and VDI. Sensitivity had no efect. As a matter of fact, at '99' sensitivity it was harder to get any high tone when swinging end to end.

Here is the amazing thing. I bumped up the disc to '80'. At this point it was giving me a short high tone EVERY SWING with a VDI of 82 no matter which direction I swung the coil over the targets. So the high disc actually helped isolate a high tone and solid VDI. I've never seen this in any detector ever! The high '80' discrimination did not appear to affect depth.

So I guess I have to start digging those 'iffy' 82 signals.

Very interesting test John. Amazing how you increased disc and started receiving a more consistent good tone. Thanks for the test and keep us posted on your hunts - Jim

I'll have to give it a shot. It'll be a learning experience as I love hearing those iron grunts. I've never been a fan of "silent searching".

I'm still playing around with the settings and noticed that too!

I'm glad someone else noticed it too. There is a video somewhere of someone turning up the mask to 80 to hunt a drive in threater. After he turned it up he started finding more coins.

John-I'm going to want to try that with my LARGE coil and the stock coil, and see if I can replicate these results!

But I agree with you 100 percent with the gain turned to 99. 95 is the max I'll go. Anything over that actually will lower sensitivity for my soil and area of detecting.

The machines have the sens and gain in the same adjustment. When you go too high on the sens you "can" get that high beam low beam in the fog effect in dense trash which is what you were simulating somewhat. Put the machine on 1 to 10 sens and watch it mellow out nicely and still have good depth and great sounds. I love em!
