Interesting lesson learned...

Last week I posted how the Platypus coil didn't like the saltwater. I went out yesterday to try it again and it was pretty bad. Falsing all over the place and very unstable. I happened to meet Kathy there and told her I was just going to go back to the car to put the stock coil on.

At first it seemed to be better, but then it started to give me problems too. I tried everything with the settings to no avail. I did pick up a couple of shallow clad, but it just didn't seem right. Very noisy. I looked back toward Kathy and could see she was digging a lot of targets yet I wasn't hearing anything. Weird. (she actually found a '42 Washington! Now that one's been in the sand for a while!)

Last night, I got to thinking about a post I read from "Doc" on the Explorer forum. It was part of a thread where some had complained about the WOT falsing a lot in the saltwater. Doc wrote that he never had a problem and mentioned that it could be something else. He said the connection at the control box was critical.

This afternoon, I went back to the beach. Before I hit low tide, I took my can of contact cleaner, sprayed the male and female connectors and put it back together. Man, let me tell you... my machine has NEVER run this smooth! I was able to run it hotter than ever and even had the gain up. Unbelieveable! I can't wait until I can get out again and give the Platypus another try. Before the coil died on this thing a couple of months ago, I was having the same problem with instablility. After they replaced the coil, I just figured all my problems, from the very first times I used it, were due to a coil that was dying at the time. It seemed to be better while digging dirt, yet I could never run the sensitivity as high as some claimed they did.

Well, I didn't find a heck of a lot today... just some clad, and some junk jewelry. Regardless, the machine performed perfectly! Boy, do I feel a lot better! I thought I was going to have to send this back to have it looked at.

So, for all you ExpII users, keep that one in mind the next time things don't seem right :)

Happy New Year everyone!

Joe

Glad all is well! Where do I get contact cleaner?

You can get the stuff from any electronics store like Radio Shack. Just make sure it's OK for plastics.

I need some for my plow! :)
