Interesting Gold Air Test GTI 2500

I recall a few discussions in the recent past about gold detecting. As I posted I just got a 10 gram gold bar a few days ago and never air tested it with the 2500 until 5 minutes ago. I was very surprised that it rang up between dime and quarter on the GTI 2500. It is a PAMP 99.999 bar. It also gave a nice clear signal at about 8-10 inches in discriminate mode. Quite a bit more in All Metal. I have one very tiny 3.2 grain Alaskan gold nugget that will not register in discriminate mode but in All Metal Mode signals at about 6-8 inches with the standard coil. This is a very unscientific indoor test. I have some old and new US 90% gold coins and bullion in my safe deposit box that I suppose I should test some day with both my Ace 250 and GTI 2500. Should I take them out of the bank or bring the detectors with me? The tellers already call me Chris the crazy coin guy.

If anybody has a hunk of 24k gold 10 grams or larger, I'd love to hear how it registers on your detector. Preferably not a chain.

Hey Chris,
I have an 7.2 gram nugget I found here in Ga. with my GTI 2500 and it reegisters 6.5 on the GTI scale. Usually lead registers 7-7.5. But I have found that bigger hunks of lead like 3 oz sinkers will register higher like your gold. I think it is more the mass of metal sometimes than the conductivity. Is really a combo of both. I also have some gold jewerly that reads near foil. I have had lead civil war bullets actually give the belltone is disc mode sometimes. So go figure...Dig it all I guess....Good post.

I remember reading your nugget post because I recall reading that finding nuggets in the southeast has become extremely rare. You definitely have to dig it all and I am notching less and less. Thanks for the information. Just what I wanted to hear.

Chris,
I just tried a 17.2 gram piece of natural nugget gold under my 2500 in coins mode and all metal. It is about an inch long and is close to 24 ct. It rang up at 7.5 on both modes and as a B size. I have a flat 2.6 gram that rang up at 4 and B size. It looks a lot like it depends on the shape and size of the nugget in this case.

Chris.

I have some small test nuggets. Don't know the weight but they are a quarter inch in size and three eights inch in size. I can't remember how the 250 tested on them but as I recall it done pretty good. I usually bury them in a gold bottle in my back yard and test them. Then I have the nice one Chris sent me for Xmas. It's about a half incher. Course to really test them one would have to bury them in some "hot" ground to simulate real nugget hunting.

Agreed Chris. I have a friend who went on a prospecting vacation in California and came home with a vial of gold in which the larger pieces were mostly around 22k. They ring up all over the place depending on size. I found a 22k 4g ring that rang up around 5.5, size B. The pure 10g bar rings at 9, size B. I'm going to try some of my 90 percent coins later this week.

Here is my final gold test with the GTI 2500. Let me again say that it is an indoor air test which I have found to be erratic. I turned off all my electronics but who knows what the neighbors were doing. I also tried a whole buch of silver coins and a very worn Mercury Dime was all over the display mostly down around 8 (dead center cent.) Every other coin was right where it should have been. I did not go to the bank and take any gold out of my safe deposit box. The only gold coin in the house was the bullion piece I tested.

I tested a 1.0 gram 10k white gold band which rang up at 3 (Foil) size B.
I tested a 3.1 gram 18k gold fillagree (very ornate, lots of scrollwork, big diamond) that indicated at 3 (Foil) size B.
I tested a 4.1 gram 10k ring which rang up at 4 (Nickel) size B.
I tested a 2.5 gram 14k band which rang up at 4 (Nickel) size B.
I tested a 4.2 gram 22 carat band which rang up at 5 (Pull Tab) size B.
I tested a 10.1 gram 10k Ring which rang up at 5.5 (Pull Tab) size B.
I tested a 1/4 ounce (8.5 gram) US Eagle 90% gold bullion proof which is 90 percent gold (21.6K) which rang up at 7 (Ring) size B. Close to $5.00 gold piece.
I tested a 10 gram 24k gold bar which rang up at 9 (High Dime) size B.

I found the results helpful. Interesting that 10k was anywhere from 3-5.5 and I'm sure would be higher with more weight. Two 22k pieces one more than twice the weight of the other rang up at 5 and 7. 22k and 24k pieces of similar weight rang up at 7 and 9. I'm sure with different carat weights and sizes I could get gold at almost anywhere on the scale. I decided I am going to run 2008 in the jewelry mode (discriminate) and the all metal modes almost exclusively. The 18k ring does not fit the pattern but I bet thats because of the shape. The lower band is very thin. The upper potion of the ring is full of holes and scrolls. I need to find a platinum band to figure out where that indicates.

If you have a 2500 and a coin or bullion close to an ounce please give it an air test for me.
