Interesting findings re. GTI1500 ground handling & Sov./Cobra II

Did a little testing yesterday with my GTI1500, a Sov. with WOT & 8", and a Cobra II w. 8". First thing I'll mention is the super tough ground here which, in some places, causes the GTI1500 to overload when closer than 2" with the stock coil. I've been kinda curious about the relative abilities of the 3 detectors & wanted to see (in my soil) what claims hold true. The GTI's, from what I've gathered on various posts & forums are considered to be real dogs in high mineralization. I was kinda thinking the same thing, but decided to find out for sure. What I did was to bury a lead fishing weight; one of those teardrop thingies with the brass wire removed & weighing maybe 1/8 ounce. It was at 3.5" & gave a low threshold response with the Sov. set to max sens. in all metal with the 8". The WOT gave an almost unnoticeable response & both couldn't find it in disc. This is where my other machines came out. First was the Infinium with 5x10" and it screamed out, allowing me to raise the coil about 5" before it started whispering. Jolly good show, what! Next was the Cobra II. Sweeping fast in disc. netted me at best an intermittent broken signal. Slowing down to a crawl, on the other hand, gave a good strong signal up to around 2" and started to break up till, at about 3" it was gone. In All metal I got maybe another inch before it faded out. Last came the GTI1500. At about 80% sens./ 0 disc. and going slow there was no signal, even when scrubbing the ground. This all changed when I decided to try whipping the coil like a White's 4 filter. What an amazing difference! All of a sudden there was a good, solid tone to almost 4". The visual ID was intermittent, but it would pinpoint & size with ease. This really surprized me and was cause for some reflection. Could it be that the GTI varies it's filters automatically, depending on ground conditions? I remember reading something along those lines on the Garrett website. Maybe that's why they're not known as particularly deep units in high mineralization. One thing that really impressed me was the sensitivity of the AM pinpoint mode & was also cause for a few thoughts. I've read that few of the White's touchpad controlled detectors have hidden menu items that can be called up with the right combination of button pushes. I wonder if the same can be said of the GTI's? Maybe there's a way to enable an AM mode like the 2500 on the 1500 (without keeping the pinpoint button depressed) & not modifying the detector. Has anyone tried experimenting? I'll try a few things today on the beach & maybe get lucky.. won't hold my breath though. Another big surprize was the Cobra II. It's basically a Treasure Baron with notch added. I've also added external GB, threshold, & SAT controls. It's about the deepest machine I've seen yet with an 8" concentric. Enough for now... Willy.

Nice report Willy. The 250 also changes personalities when you whip the coil.
