About six weeks ago, I damaged my screen so that I could not see much. I soon realised that I could continue detecting in Iron Mask Mode and listen to the tones. Since I pretty much dig ALL REPEATABLE signals, this was quite efficient.
This reminded me that after extended use I believe that with the XS as well as with the Sovereign, we tend to hunt by sound most of the time and use the ID portion as an identifier.
The ID option is still important, especially if we are cherry picking due to time constraints. However, I also feel that detecting with discriminatiion causes you to "pass" on many good targets due to "target averaging"!
"The rest of the story" is that now my headphone recepticle has faild so I sent the XS into the shop for repair. Thank goodness, I kept my Sovereign for back up...
Have a Great Day, My Friends!

I agree we tend to look at the meter too much and go by what it says instead of using it for a refference as intended.
I was try out a used Sovereign I picked up Tuesday and got the tone that was very firmilar and looked at the Sunray meter which showed 160 and I knew that was not the number for that tone. I dug up a Buffalo nickle which normaly would be a 143-144 number, but the tone was that of a nickle and the reason was the averaging of that nickle plus some other junk. Now if I would have only been going by the numbers that nickle would still be there as that number is trash.
This also have has happened many times with the Explorer as many of my good coins read on the smart find screen as trash, but the tones were right on. This I why you see so many say it is so important to learn those tones that are repeatable and go by the tones over the meter every time.
Jim using that Sovereign again will be like listening to a old freind that is nice to listen to.
Good Luck and hope it dont take too long to get your Explorer back.
Rick
