Interesting chain of events today...........

I was hunting an area posted no trespassing.............. I had permission (Verbal).............. had the name of party who allowed me to detect, and the phone number.
About 15 minutes into the hunt a local police officer showed up. Asked what was I doing. I told him. He asked if I saw the no trespassing signs posted.
I said I sure did.........his response was ..Did I think they were posted for everyone but me. He then asked for ID, and I said "Now hold on Officer"..I have permission to be here.I Gave him the owners name and phone number... He told me unless I had something in writing I would have to leave...rather than argue I said OK..............as I was leaving he told me I was lucky.Had I not had the name and number of property owner with me he would have taken me in. But since I had it.He would not take me in for sorting out the situation. He suggested before I return to have proper permission in writing to stay on the property. He explained the home owner( Property owner) had requested a special watch and had not removed the request.Until that was removed the PD would be enforcing the special watch. He said it could not be both ways..either it was posted, or it would not be posted. I told him that should be taken up with the owner..not me. He got a little irritated and said I best leave now..LOL.....I thought so too.. HAHAHAHAHA

Wow, Elton, that could have turned out badly if you hadn't had the land owners name and number. If the site does have promise, bring the owner a little something and get permisssion in writing. Good luck...and next time stay out of trouble. HH jim tn

Sounds like that police officer took his job seriously or had little man attitude:laugh:

Who do you have to be to get the police to perform "a special watch".

I'll bet that if you had your detector or wallet stolen, they wouldn't have gotten there in 15 minutes.

Take care, Dave

I suspect he was driving by, saw me, and stopped.. Most likely they had it on their daily check sheet.

I did call the owner..He confirmed a special watch had been requested... Some copper was stolen from the old house.
He decided he wanted the watch, and no more permission is granted..verbal or other wise.. He did apologize that I was questioned.

That is how it is for us. We havent taken up fishing or golf or RC cars (although all of those require special considerations, too).
Our hobby places us on the list of fringe activitites. People view us askance, often enough.
There are other places to hunt, but I would politely keep after the owner, as a friend would, just on principle. Im a big advocate of our rapidly diminishing individual pursuits. Any chance I get to bolster them, I take it.

I called explained my hobby. He said sure..gave me his name, and cell phone number.............I guess the PD contacted him after my experience with the Officer. He decided he wanted the security watch kept in place........... Seems like I will not be hunting that site............

My point of this post was to say.."Even with permission" there may be other circumstances that prevent your actually getting to detect a property.

I wasn't crying about it. I was more surprised than anything.

Fair enough. I got most of that originally. And you are right - there really is not property that is "open." There are always contingencies, proviso, caveats, etc. Even on so-called "public land."

My only input is to stay in touch with the cat, as a friend. Call him once and a while and genuinely ask how he is doing. He gave you permission once; it won't do any harm to recognize that going forward. Otherwise, you seem like a rascal, only caring enough about him to hunt on his property and take whatever you find.

Who knows? Handle it openly and in a comradely way and he may recant in the future.

Definitely a bummer, especially not getting to detect the site afterall. But, you really can't fault the officer for doing what he's paid to do.
