When you detect a target and get a good sound, good numbers, and then you pinpoint and you get the dreaded RED DIAMOND, do you still dig or walk away?? This is what was happening to me today, a lot! I dug some, but not all, and all the ones I dug were trash. Also, sometimes the same target signal would give me the target cursor or the RED DIAMOND. They were all low conductor numbers. All can slaw or pull tabs. But I felt I had to dig to be sure I wasn't missing anything good. Is this due to the soil conditions; corrosion of the target?
By the way...I found nothing worthy to take a picture of! But, tomorrow is another day:)

Well, the first thing I look for when I get a good tone is how consistent does it hit. And then start rotating around the target while sweeping. While doing this keep an eye on the exact spot the center of the coil is located when the tone sounds. You should notice no or very little shift in the spot on the ground where your coil is positioned when the tone/s are sounding off. If you notice a large shift in where the CTX sounds off while you are rotating around the supposed target it's likely iron. The 2 way only hits are the trickier ones to decipher. This is where you want to pay real close attention and see how consistent your CTX sounds off. Try and vary your sweep speed to get the supposed target to sound off as consistent as you can. My rule of thumb is if it sounds off on 3 out of 4 sweep passes on average I'm digging as long as the CTX is sounding off on the exact same spot on the ground I'm digging. Also, using pinpoint in either sizing or normal is usually a waste of time when trying to pinpoint coin per say that's colocated with iron. Just dig in the spot where the detector is sounding off. Now if I'm having a slow day I may dig targets that are generally considered more iffy, but these are generally in areas where I have already had some success. Happy hunting.

If it is a stable, consistent 2-way tone, I dig. Red Diamond be durned.
