Interested in learning all I can about Metal detecting.

Not sure if this is the right place or not but here goes...

I recently found myself interested in metal detecting and have done a decent amount of research but there are some questions I haven't found answers to yet. So rather than beat my head against a wall trying to figure out where online to search I thought I might ask here. So here are a few questions... Oh and I live in Las Vegas Nevada.

Where is a good place to start looking? In or out of city limits?

Are there groups in or around Las Vegas that go out in southern Nevada prospecting who would take a tyro like me in to learn the ropes? And how would I find these groups?

Would I need to buy a really good detector or would a $200-$300 detector be enough to make it worth while? And should I get all the accessories?

How long does an average detector last before it needs to be completely or partially replaced?

I understand that some public parks have strict rules or laws against using detectors in them, where do I find these laws or rules?

I know that prospecting for gold is done with detectors, for placer deposits and such but there are laws against trespassing and prospecting in many areas. Where do I find these laws listed or who would I contact to find them?

If I go the prospecting rout where would I find a listing of areas in Nevada that have produced placer deposits? As in, is there a database somewhere I could access to take a look at where where people have reported finding deposits?

I know that placer deposits come in large and small pieces. From tiny flakes to decent sized nuggets. How big does a nugget or flake need to be to be detected with a standard metal detector? How deep can it be detected?

If I choose coin and other treasure type stuff to look for, where would be a good place to find their values?

If I go the nugget hunting rout, where would I sell what I found? I see gold is at about $800 a troy ounce these days but can you actually sell it in nugget or flake form for that much?

What kind of batteries do most detectors use? Can they be recharged? How long do the batteries last when in use? How many extra batteries is it prudent to bring on a 2 day trip for example?

Do detectors break down into easy to carry cases for travel?

Hoping to learn a few things...

There are many forums within this forum that will answer most of your questions. A $200-$300 detector is a good start........Garrett Ace 250 is a good starter and works well in parks. You need to contact the authorities about park hunting and absolutely no hunting in any National Park or Historic area. No one will truthfully give you any info where all the gold is hiding so you will have to do your own research.

I do agree with Bobbie on the Garrett Ace 250
it uses AA batts and can use rechargables as well, you can get that and your accessorys for 300 bucks easy
With normal AA batts you cat get many many many hrs of tecting in on a set.

The Ace can be broken down to fit in a small bag as well.
You should not need to replace a unit for many years and all are covered if new from the factory warranty as well.

You can google search for clubs in your area and they will help you with a lot in your area as well.

Have fun and enjoy the time out and the finds are a PLUS :D... Im tired

Tamb,I hunted many parks in Vegas and no one ever said any thing to me.I had cops wake just on side of me,All they said was good morning.Bobbie is correct Ace is good to start.Letter on you may want to up grade.

Ya'll have fun now
