Instability with my SE today

detectorbase

New member
Hello

Today I was noticing some pretty massive instability with my detector. When I got somewhat close to the building I was hunting around, approximately 5 yards from the building on all sides, my detector was chattering like crazy. I used Noise Cancel and dropped the sensitivity, but it would continue until I got away from it. My sensitivity was normally at 22, but I lowered it to 5 and was experiencing the same problem. The building is a large older 3 story building constructed out of stone (circa 1902).

Anyone know how to deal with this? Or can explain what's going on? I have the Minelab Explorer SE.

Thanks!
DB

things running inside the building. Is this older building an Apartment Building or was there anybody inside running anything electrical? This would cause the SE to be unstable if there was enough things running like TV, Radio, Microwave, Etc. I was detecting in an old Park last fall and on one side of this Park, I couldn't detect it because of the interference from houses and other unknown things. I know there is plenty of Old Coins on that side of the Park that an Explorer cannot even touch which is really too bad. I was using the Explorer SE at the time doing some test's with it and to see how much of an improvement it was compared with my Explorer XS. You may have to go back and retry that spot at different times of day to see if you can't get in between the interference. Good Luck and HH.

Hmm.. It's a government building.. so I can see that being issue with the electrical. I guess I need to switch detectors when I get close. That sucks!

It could also be that the footing for the building is wider that ou think. On higher built buildings the footing with rebar could be 6 foot wide to support the weight.

Just my two cents

There is a school that I hunt that gives me the same problem - get within 8 foot of the building and my EXP II goes nuts. Only thing that helped was going to my 4x7 coil - not perfect but better.

Bummer. I'm already using 8" coil there.

One wonders if the shielding of the external wiring is old and not up to par with present day wiring and is causing the problem..

Hmmm. I'm liking that possibility. Like I said this buidling was built in 1902. I don't think there is any re-bar, since it's built with large stone blocks and brick. Did they even have re-bar in 1902? Just curious.

Underground Power Lines might be the issue. It's all around the perimeter of the building. I'm thinking they might have some crazy communication devices in there or something.

I think my only option is to pull the XLT out for close up work.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!
