Inside the Excalibur headphones

My 1996 excal has always had headphone problems so I finally hacked it open to repair.
For those of you who have had those cheap plastic tangs break off you don't need to worry when you drill for screws. The speaker is only about 1/8" thick and is glued to the white plastic you can see in the headphone.
The soft black part will pull out but you will really have to yank on it. The white plastic is glued in at 3 points and you will probably break it like I did taking it out. No big deal .. just silicone it back in. All the lttle wire tie does is hold the wire on the back-side.
There really isn't anything you can fix unless the wires are broke like mine.(see in pic) I just re-soldered them and covered them in silicone.

I hope that minelab has made these better by now as it stinks to pay so much for a detector that is made like crap.
Here is the pic after I took of it apart....
Hope it helps someone.

I hope you are right about making them better, hope mine don't break after ONLY 10 years?? but like you I probably will take them apart and resolder the wire, only thing I hate about that is soldering fine wires, do they work now?

Me hates them @#$@#akes too!

Yes they work great.
I am brutal to this detector and I know the wires broke because I caught it on something. These excals are a lot tougher than people think. Mine has been hammered in Hawaii, Oregon beaches and desert, Utah mountains and desert, and now the midwest. It has been dropped, thrown, closed in the van door, bit by a rattlesnake, used to beat away the rattlesnake, caught in barbwire fence, and stepped on by a cow. The rod assy has been broken so many times I just make my own now... but the unit itself ...TOUGH !!!

The reason I posted the pic is because almost every excal I've seen (older ones) had those plastic prongs break off that hold the ear-cups to the headset. The solution is to drill small holes and use a panhead stainless screw in place of the plastic prong. there was a lot of talk you might drill the speaker .... but with the unit cut open it is obvious that you wouldn't hit it.

Hey MO.Snakedigger, Did you ever consider going into the T.V. Commercial Business? With the detailed description that you just gave, you remind me of some of those guys on T.V. commercials abusing their FORD TRUCKS, and American Tourister Luggage. Hope you don't take offense, but I got a good chuckle out of your post. And they say FISHER CZ's are Gorilla Proof!! HH,
