It was cold and sprinkling this morning but I really felt like going out for a while. Decided after all the posts last few days about finding nickels and gold jewelry that I would make today's hunt a bit more like when I started MDing. This means dig everything from the start of the hunt to the end. No notching. GTI 2500 in jewelry mode. First stop was a baseball field. I found the 925 pendant in about 3 minutes. That made my day, until later. It has some initials on it. Went to the old part of the park and poked around for some silver coins. Got close with 7 or 8 1960s coins but nothing pre 1964.
Decided to move to the soccer fields about 1/2 mile away. There were some high school and college boys playing a pick up game on the main field so I bopped down to the practice field. A nice pace of about a coin every 5 or 6 minutes. A few neat spills. Then the ring. Junk. I was hopeful until I cleaned it up. Then I got a nice nickel hit but size A. Cut my slit in the grass and saw the unmistakable gleam of gold! A cool soccer ball pendant (2.45g) and in super nick too. That REALLY made my day, until later.
Stopped at the grocery store to pick up a few items on the way home. Took my place in line and I hear the unmistakable sound of silver coins clinking together. Hmm. The Coinstar machine again. I bolted over to the lady and saw she had a few silver coins in her hand. I slowly explained to her that she was making a mistake. I noted she had only put in 8 bucks so far. She said the machine was acting up and kept rejecting her change. I explained that she was putting potentially valuable silver coins in the machine and only getting face value. I offered to buy the rest. We sat on a bench and looked over what she had left. 3 bucks in silver quarters. The walking libery half. 50 wheats. A few in the teens. One quarter is a good date but in bad nick. 1936D. A few modern pennies. I offered her 20 bucks for what she had left. A much better price than she was willing to take and a good deal for me too. She took a long time deciding. She kept saying maybe she should just put the coins in the machine. I suppose she didn't trust this dirty, sweaty guy. The mayor walked by and I stopped him and asked him to vouch for my character. We finally did the deal. She then said she had more old coins and lots of half dollars at home and I took her number. I promised her a fair deal and if she had anything great I would be willing to Ebay it for her for a percentage. Now my day has gone from great to PERFECT!
Got home and counted and cleaned everything up a little. The pendant that I swore was marked 10k in the field is clearly marked 14k. This day is going down as one of the best days in 2008 thus far. 89 modern coins for $9.50
How do you find gold? You get lucky, like I did today. Thanks God! It was a very bright signal. Nothing like a nickel. I was beginning to forget. Funny that I posted last night that I could be patient and wait for gold to return to me. That was an easy wait!
