...keep doing the same thing over and over with the expectation of different results...that's how I roll. All the local spots are done, over; devoid of many deep coins. So why do I constantly head back there....'cause they are close and I need to get out.

I haven't been out much this summer, so this week I went out with a friend and found 2 rosies in a virgin area of the park. Today I went with another friend to a NYC park. Had my permit (thank golly..they're serious about this stuff there) and my hand digger.

The rules are restrictive. If you read the area where you can hunt in some parks, it eliminates most, leaving basically no where you can hunt. Can't hunt on "manicured lawn", not w/i 50" of a ballfield, soccerfield or badmitten square (jk). Can't hunt w/i 50" of the tree line OR in the woods. What does this leave? A small patch of grass too tall, forming a 200' x 200' section in the middle of 1000 acres! Oh, the "Cricket" field was unofficially a field, so this was permitted too.

Within 20 minutes of arrival, we got moved out of an area , shushed along and told to go to a specific area (of course after our permits were inspected). THe 'unmanicured" lawn area stunk but it gave up a merc for me, a junk ring and some wheats.

It was hot, real hot. I was sweating heavily and uncomfortable. After several hours we moved along and I left my pal somewhere in a questionable section of the park. Can you distinguish between manicured and unmanicured grass?

I went for a drink during which time my pal had found another 4 silvers including 2 barber q's . (For some reason, this coin still eludes me) . I dropped a glove and didn't want to hang there 'cause I hate getting asked to leave, so I went back to my original location. An hour or so later and he was still there so I finally joined him.

There were now armies of people and high schoolers running the track nearby and this urban hunt became a bit distracting. Hey, the Bronx aint my hood, let's face it!

Anyway within 2 minitues, I had a deep, stand alone rosie and in another 10 minutes I had a washington next to a piece of garbage. A Solid 00 28 (for us digital guys); this is one of my fav ferrous/cond combos!

I dug some clad and 8 wheaties. I sure wish i had the gumption to hang in that area previously, but I didn't. My pal is hardcore. We got thrown out of a historic park oneday. It was obvious we shouldn't be there but it was public and had no signs discouraging the hobby. A dude came up to me and said "they'll arrest you and take your machine"
but that didn't stop us. Eventually my "guide" went to the office and someone said it was ok, but the park super drove across the lawn in his truck to tell me to get the heck outta there.

Anyway, he ended up with 2 barber q's, a dateless SLQ, 7 mercs and 20 wheats. He kicks my butt every single time.

After 2 years with my SE, I still struggle listening to things I should ignore. It took me at least 3 hours to stop listening to the hi aluminum tones that give a 00 07 sound (the conduct numbers vary). THey all sound like 00 29 to me (the clad quarters I must dig...actually this sounds nearly the same as the 00 27 and 00 28! ). I still can't distinguish depth by tone, I generally look at the readout for everything but the low tones. Wish I could control these element of my hunting, but have yet to master any of this. Perhaps some of you are in the same boat or have moved past this stage. I'd sure like to learn to do this as it would increase my productivity tremendously.

Ok thanks for listening....

Boy! I think I would have to move out of that state with all those restrictions on detecting. Because I don't think I could sell my SE PRO. That's my baby.

You did well considering all the obstacles . I used to hunt with a guy who made me look bad regularly he cleaned out some of my best spots .Shame on me.

get rid of the digital screen:starwars:...switch to smartscreen and stay there exclusively.:beers:

I'm tellin' ya' it makes a big difference in being able to discern good hits from bad ones.

There is just way more usable info available when you can watch cursor action...movement...placement...flutter...bounce...etc...as compared to a flashing number....TRUST ME:)

I can't put it into words...you just have to trust it and learn it...but it does make a huge difference.

All this being said...looks like you are doing just fine using the settings you are:clapping::biggrin::thumbup:

Now to your post....one of the coolest posts I have read in some time. I had NO idea it was like that in your parks.:thumbdown:

Nice finds ....

But that seriously blows the way they are singling out our hobby that way. And we can thank all of the numbnuts who went in there back in the 70's and 80's and did'nt do a good enough job covering their tracks. Once again ... selfishness and greed, combined with that percentage of the general public who think the parks are theirs, cast a negative attitude on our hobby .

Great info here. be interested in his opinion on etrac as well. Just what exactly you looking for on smart screen? less movement?? Digital guy here <----- hangin head...lol

Bryce,

I am aware of your position on the smart screen. I have spent time with it and rounding the corner might be like a junkie trying to get off the juice. One day last year I had a nice sound. THe digital numbers were iffy and on the smart screen, I had the top 2 right squares only. I have heard that this is a non digger, but correct me if i am wrong. It turned out to be a washington silver underneath a large, rusted, iron spike. Since then, I sometimes use it as a refernce to learn, but not a guide.

Everything and everyone tells me to do it, but i just can't get it together.

All headphones are not equal and some just work better on certain units, excellent tonal recognition is a God given talent but can be enhanced by many hours in the field and am sure Bryce has
done just that and paid his dues....we all have our favorites no matter what brand and having used a heck of a lot of units when it comes to deep silver Explorers are top of the line.
Having said the above heck I think your doing great and have gone a foot or so for a washer or piece of aluminum junk that I swore in my head was a good coin and am sure Bryce has also
so keep up the good detecting and also admit with fences going up, no detecting signs, sure you can detect but don't dig, insurance liabilities causing landowners to say no and on and on..heck if it was too easy you would get bored so thanks for a nice interesting post and hang in there..

I know what you mean, the parks are barren here too. Consider private property, just knock on doors. City yards give up the goods, and if you can score permission it gets easier every time. The country yards are great for silver halves...knocking on doors adds a little spice to the boring park hunts.
Good luck!

Good idea AMC, i have thought about this many times. I have spent many years in the sales industry and I knocked on doors for a living for too long. At this point, my work is all email / phone call/ meeting. When it's over, I've had enough of people (in a good way). You are correct in that it is super productive. It's the only way to get a virgin site. I do ask clients from time to time and this is an approach I can handle...especially if they live in an old place.

thanks for the idea.

If you are having problems with 00 07 targets sounding anywhere close to 00 28 targets then you are obviously running ferous sounds, i would think coductive would be much better especially in a park.
