infrared thermal cameras

They are picking up only items that generate heat.
No way will a thermal imaging unit help a m.d.'er.

I;m not so sure that it wouldnt work,, I;m thinking along the lines that as the sun warms up the ground,, the dirt may reach a certain temp,, and a coin may reach a higher temp due to the metal content,, so I guess it might be feasible,, but i;m no rocket scientet,, I gueess somoeone will have to borrow a thermal from a fire dept and try it out,,

I think under the right conditions it would allow you to see through leaf litter and such.

I think it would show land features not detectable under normal light conditions.

Depressions in the ground like old out houses and stuff.

There are hacks available for cheapo cameras to convert them to IR !

Most just call for the removal of the IR filter in front of the lens and addition of a IR only transparent filter, like the black unexposed film on the end of a role.

I think I will give it a go when I have time.

This Idea on You Tube may work to see land features better. NOT TRUE IR but may work!

Here is how to Hack a cheapo camera!

Well after the sun warms the earth those things under the ground that radiate the heat at different rates can be detected if ou have enough resolution in your gear but you would not be able to tell clearly what it was just that something was their but only if it had enough mass to retain heat and radiate it at a different rate then the surrounding soil or rock. So if you are coin shooting or relic hunting near the surface regular hobby detectors are the way to go. If you need to go deep then if you have the time and money things like nutron scanning, deep broad spectrum pulse induction, ground penatrateing radar and the the like would be more useful then IR or thermal for what you are probably wanting to do. Well if you can get above the ground you can see where structures used to be even after hundreds of years of plowing and discking etc.....I have my Pilots Liscense and you would be amazed at what you can see from the air. Even on farm fields that have been plowed and disced constantly for 50-100 years you can see the outlines from where house's,barns or some other structure stood before being torn down and the land reclaimed. If you look online you can find blue prints for building you own ground penatrateing radar that you can attach to the strut of a Cesna light air plane and do your own deep treasure and structure hunting.
