Turn the GAIN knob until the pointer is aligned with the triangle preset position, turn the detector on and set the volume with the knob pointer around the 9 o,clock position, then lower the coil to an inch or little less from the ground, making sure there's no metal under the coil, and turn the TUNER knob until you hear a slight threshold humming sound.

When using it, keep the coil as close to the same distance as you can from the ground as you swing. I'm sure you already know that when you swing the coil over a target the audio volume will increase and the intensity meter will indicate the strength of the signal and also give an indication of depth and target size. It will go all the way to the right on a large shallow target and will barely move on a weak, deeper target. Except for raising or lowering the gain to fit soil conditions and adjusting the volume to your preference that's it.

I had two different Techna XR's, at different times, years ago. I added buying and selling used detectors to a sideline used camera equipment business I had from the late 1980's until 6 or 7 years ago and got two of the Techna XR's in trades at different times. I used them a couple of times each at the school down the street and found a few coins, don't remember what I did with the first one as it was about 20 years ago but I gave the second one to a neighbors kid. At one time First Texas was Techna Inc.(also Pacific Northwest Instruments) before becoming First Texas, and made the XR series of TR detectors.
