Reasons for recent changes to the cam site setup - Tuesday, October 25, 2011
By now, most of you have noticed that the cam site doesn't look the same as it used to. We now only have the automatic feeder in front of the camera. The "goody" table and the peanut butter bar have been removed. There are several reasons why we changed things up a bit and I wanted to explain why:
First of all, there are several reasons we made the changes. One reason is to avoid having potential "problems" with the bears in the area. With us visiting the site frequently in order to put out the goodies, the Florida Fish and and Wildlife Conservation Commission (and us) were concerned that bears could "potentially" associate humans with food and this could cause a problem down the road for ourselves, or neighboring properties. We have been working with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission the past couple of months to come up with a solution that would work out for everyone. They have been very helpful and we have been able to share ideas and work with one another closely on the issue.
Another reason for the change is to try to cut down on costs of running the site. It's extremely costly to keep stock of all of the goodies we were putting out. While we have been getting donations from viewers, we still have quite a bit of costs that come out of our pockets as well. While corn is still expensive (especially right now), it is much cheaper than what we were feeding before.
With our busy schedules, just having the automatic feeder releives us from having to visit the cam site so frequently. We can fill the feeder up with 225 lbs of corn and not have to worry about it for a couple of weeks.
Even though we aren't putting out the goodies anymore, we will still have plenty of wildlife visiting the site. All of the wildlife out there will eat corn! Not only will they have corn, but we are going to continue to maintain the food plot for the deer too. We have new seed that we are getting ready to plant in the near future and that should help attract more deer to the cam site!
If anyone has any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us on our Facebook Page or shoot us an email at flwildlifecam@gmail.com.
