Ok, I'll admit I'm pretty new at this metal detecting stuff. Been doing it for about 1 1/2 yrs now. Have great fun but I do have few questions. Now I was always told there is no such thing as a stupid question. But I'm going to ask anyway. What are clad coins? Rosies? I've see the term used alot but don't rightly know what they are. Next question. I live in Northern VA and if you get caught detecting in a park, ball field, community center etc., they will slam you in the big house here. So when I read that this ballpark turned up some good finds or this old park turned up several wheaties or Merc I'm wondering how did you get to hunt in those areas? I'm guessing the laws here are different here in Northern VA then in many other areas. Thanks for letting me bend some ears here. This is by far the best forum room on metal detecting on the web. Thanks all. Ron Z

CLAD modern day coins. rosie Rosevelt dimes. Sorry about your liberal laws. Try hunting private property with permission. Real estate for sell.etc.

Thanks John. Now I get it, Dah . . . Yea our laws down here can get in your way sometimes. I do hunt private property when I can get permission. Right now I'm hunting an 1880 house. Found two buttons, about 30 cents in Clad coins (I'm a fast learner), one 1906 IH and one 1907 IH. But its a big lot and I have lots of searching to do yet. Once again thanks for the info. Ron Z

Have you tried to see if the local authorities will issue you a detecting permit? Here in my area we can search the parks, but we must have a permit from the parks dept. The permit is free and if you are stopped for any reason the permit keeps you out of trouble, from the authorities and the locals. Try joining the local historical society and approach the authorities with the societies backing. You just may not be able to keep everything, somethings may have to go to the society. Happy Hunting!
PS Have you asked why they don't let you detect? It may be a wrongly perceived idea someone has, and a little bit of dialogue may open it up to you.

Local authorities issue permits!!!! NOT HERE. We just had a case in Fairfax, VA where they arrested a person for digging in parks. He probally would have gotten off easy but he would never file his holes. So the park authorty waited for him and nab 'em. He was finded and was given a suspended sentence. I belong to two detecting clubs and one is actively involved with the historical society. But even they don't want us to "distrub" the ground. Around here they all think that archaeologist are the only ones who know what they are doing.
Personally I have given alot of my finds to homeowners who allow me to hunt their property. I would have no problem turning over everything I found if I could hunt in parks and such. Its the thrill of finding the needle in the haystack that I enjoy. HH Ron Z

Ron.
Perhaps if you demonstrated to some of the Society members on some of your turf how neatly you could remove the found treasure , without making a mess and perhaps have a couple handsfull of grass seed in your pouch and sprinkle a little around the area you dug they may not look at detecting the same way. A sharp thick blade hunting style knife cuts a neat plug which can easily be put back into the hole you dug and no one will ever no you even dug a hole. Mention also that some of the items that may be in these areas could be valueble to the society. OR strike up a deal I think I once read on here, offer them 25 dollars an hour to dig, you keep what you find or you dig for free and at the end of the dig you evenly split according to value, all of the finds and just happen to have your coin book handy to find the value of any old coins.
Worth a try anyway !!

Ray, I like that idea. I'll give it a try. Thanks, Ron Z
