I haven't found many things that look like they are from the Civil War here in Maryland. So I was very excited when I found this. Ive been told it might be a Button or a Buckle. It looks to big to be a button and too small to be a buckle. It has a shank on the back that comes out on the side where it has the numbers 55555 on it. Ive looked at a lot of pictures on the Net and haven't found anything like it???? Maybe it's not Civil War era. Thanks for any help.

NICE FIND, I FOUND A BUTTON WITH THE SAME EAGLE ON IT. I FOUND ONE IN A BOOK THAT SAID IT WAS FROM AN ARTILLERY UNIT, NOT SURE ABOUT THE YEAR.YOURS LOOKS LIKE A CLIP.

Looks like the tongue to a two piece buckle.

Ok I can see that..... I thought it was too small to be a buckle but now I can see how it is the tongue part and would fit inside the larger part. Thanks for the responses and the pictures.
