info on the best metal detector on the market

The infinium is the only PI machine available currently, that can give you some discrimination for digging certain kinds of targets. However, it is not recommended you use a PI in a junk infested area. Also, there is a learning curve with the Garrett Infinium. If you are completely new to metal detecting, don't get any PI, as you must have some experience both in the field and theory, and how they both interact.

Having said that, the Infinium has audio signals, "High-low" and "Low High". As a general rule (but not always) gold, iron, clad read "High-Low". Silver coins and rings read "Low-high". So the operator of this machine has to learn what the different signals mean, and where the better locations are to increase the probability of digging good targets. This machine can also ID iron for you, using the reverse discrimination method, to cut down on digging junk. I know of one gentleman who just digs "low-High signals, and he has done extremely well with silver coins and rings. Also, this machine reads shallow targets with a louder signal, and the deeper targets are softer, so once you learn the machine and it's tones, you can guesstimate the depth and size of a target. I have dug one cheap chain with mine, and the machine gave a strong signal on it.

There are many other tricks to use on this machine, and it also should be ground balanced + given the best frequency to use. if you use this machine and have it tuned properly, it has been quoted as being one (if not the) of the deepest metal detectors out there.
I could type a couple pages on this unit, but I don't have the time, so I am going to refer you to a Garrett Infinium Forum.
I got mine 3 weeks ago and am still learning. I try to watch the video at least 5 x a week and have downloaded about 25 pages on this baby covering things which are not in the manual. I used a Garrett Sea Hunter Mark II last year.

And after playing with the Infinium, I have noticed that they are completely different in the way they ID targets. I can already think of several applications where the Infinium will work better then a standard metal detector.
