Info on older models for purchase

Hi,
I'm new to the hobby and am looking to interest my 15 year old son in some outdoor activity. I'd like to purchase a detector on ebay, most likely a White's. We live in Mass. and will propably use it in woods, fields, and occassionally the beach (in that order).
I'd like to keep the cost under $100.00, which I realize means an older version of something. Currently I'm looking at:
4900D Coinmaster
5900D Coinmaster
5000D Coinmaster
6000D
6000D Series 2
6000Di Series 3
Eagle
These all seem to fall into the right price range. I really don't know the difference or which might be newer technology.
Any light shed on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

I'd say you would be better off with a White's Classic I or a Tesoro Compadre. These are recent machines, entry models from top manufacturers, and will be lighter and not use expensive and heavy C cells. Used price would be around $100. Both are excellent performers.

You might be able to find a Garrett ACE 250 for $130 used. That would be a really good unit for a kid.

Some of the White's machines you listed are older but still sell for over $100, sometimes $200. I'd pick the units mentioned above over the old machines that do go for $100.

Maybe somebody can chime in on decent Bounty hunters that can be found at the right price...

Why not post an ad on the Classifiedslooking for a decent cheap machine and see what comes up. You can write me direct or post here for more info.

:cool:Hi mmbs...Just a word of caution about the metal detectors for sale that are 10 years old or older. Electronics pros say that the circuitry and wiring have a tendency to "dry out" after many years and become fragile. There are many older detectors out there that function flawlessly, but there is always a chance that you could get a bad one. It is best to go with a new model at the beginner level line. Just my 2 cents. Good luck.

n/t

the 6000 DI or eagle
because they show depth AND identification
of the target. THe others only display depth.
the 6000 DI would be my pick
for ease of use for a beginner.:laugh::super:

the 5000d and the 6000 di 3 are very good machines. the 5000 is lighter and the 6000 might tire him out fast, depending on his build. but they are both very good machines

Thanks to all who offered advice.
We actually found a Classic III Plus on ebay and it seems to be working fine.
My son is very eager to go hunting, but with snow on frozen ground he's going to have to wait a bit. He has found every screw, nail and snippet of wire on the basement floor.
It may be a long wait until Spring.
