Info on old button?

Anyone have any idea the age on this thing? 4 inches deep around an old late 1800s early 1900s post office that is now a house.

I'd guess it could have come off a postal employees uniform a long time ago ("P" for Postal ?) It is the "Postal Service" so it seems reasonable that the button would be very similar to obvious military uniform buttons. Either that or else it possibly designates a particular military unit (P Company ?) Pure speculation on my part but it is an extremely beautiful button . . very nice find.
