I am about to become a total beginner in treasure hunting with a metal detector and I found this model whites metal detector forsale used locally in Mass and I'm wondering if its a decent model,,,, any advice would be helpful,,, as for what I want to do I basically just want to go to the beach and see if I can find any jewelery or change where our beach here has alot of waves and the water is always pretty cold.

Hi

One question about the beach, is it a fresh water or an ocean beach? It makes a big difference if it is a 'wet' salt water beach,.... multi freq. detectors do much better than a single freq. detector like the 6000; in the wet salt water sand. I'm sure the 6000 would handle the fresh water beaches OK. The 6000 would handle the dry ocean beach just fine, but in the wet salty sand it may become quite unstable and noisey. JMTC's worth.

this would be for the salt water,, low tide over wet sand? do you have any ideas on the best model for this application something that has good reviews and is user friendly? it would be more the wet salty sand and then maybe 20% in the woods or some old farm areas.

Whites DFX is a multe Frq, Thought id throw that out thear , Is thear someone out thear with more Info 4R Tajue17 ??? Mickfin

also you folks who know check the classifieds out here for me and link me to the detectors that would work for me, salt water/wet sand, and I guess general dirt/farms, fields, but I want something decent not just a starter model but the starter model that can run with the nicer ones in those.

thanks

I have go with the MXT can work well just about any place and is easy to use. Can start hunting right off the bat just using the per sets and later on as you become better you will be able to fine tune it for the areas you are hunting.

I dont know to mutch about the MXT it might be ok on salt But i know one thing about it, It dosent have a Volume and it can wake the Dead, If you dont use Headphgones, Its loud???
I think if tou find a DFX it might be Best if you want a VLF unit with a discriminstion, If you dont mind digging the best 4R the salt is a PI it wont see the salt and the black sand,
and it will go Deeper thean a VLF unit, Mickfin

The 6000 DI Pro SL is a powerful detector that is best suited to coin, relic and treasure hunting. It does not like wet salt sand although it does have a TR disc mode that will Disc out salt beach sand but depth in those conditions will not be as good as a good beach dedicated machine like The Excal, BHID, SOV series, and beach PI units. It sounds like a multi frequency VLF machine like the SOV or Excal might suit you as a general purpose detector.
If you tried a beach dedicated PI you would not be happy with its performance in iron mineralised ground away from the beach whereas the Sov and the Excal will operate anywhere except in high iron mineralisation and even there they will be better than most other single frequency VLFs.

If you tried a PI such as the Infinium that will work very well in any ground and is waterproof you would have to contend with digging a lot of trash due to the lack of good discrimination and if you intend to do the parks and show grounds then this machine might be a bit of a hand full for a beginner.

I have found my old Sov XS to be a great general purpose detector and have used it very successfully in the gold fields, Parks, Gardens Showgrounds, Ghost Towns and it is one of, if not the best, salt beach detector ever made. The Excal is a waterproof SOV.

This is just my opinion and I am sure other detectorists have other good suggestions.

Cheers,
Fisher G
