Infinium questions

Hi all,

I have a few infinium questions which I hope someone can help me with.

I bought a new infinium about a year ago with DD and Mono coils. I have used it on the beach a bit with success. I did find that when I had the box hip mounted I got a little more noise than when it was on the shaft.

I recently decided I wanted to go for gold in the bush. I headed out and tried the Mono. Boy it was noisy. Continually going high low. I have read these forums and tired a every thing I can think of without being able to clean up this noise. When I change back to the DD it is much clearer.

As a novice I do not actually know 'what I should be hearing'. I have uploaded an audio file of a few minutes for experienced Infinium people to listen to and comment. My connecters appear fine, tried with new batteries.

The recording was today in Enfield State park Victoria Australia. Box hip mounted. Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

Link above should lead you to my recording.

Thanks in advance.

If you want to help but have trouble getting the files please email me at jim.tatlock at bigpond.com

Hi Jim...I know this sounds a little elementary but did you check your batteries, do a proper ground balance over an area where you are positive there was no metal and do a frequency adjust? Did you try operating your Infinium in another location to see if you had the same problem? I am at work and can not open your drop box recording. However, based on your description it sounds like and I suspect it was electrical interference. Were you around any electric fences, air conditioners, power line (both above ground and below ground)? Electrical interference in my experience makes my Infinium chatter "Hi/Low Hi/Low ..." If you follow the following link, http://www.findmall.com/read.php?62,1919976 and select the video there is a demonstration of what electrical interference sounds like and how to correct it. I hope this helps.

Thanks Over and Fishers,

I have checked and replace and tested with new batteries. I tested the detector on my property which is on acreage and it is now where near as bad as in the field. This make me think it might be my inexperience at ignoring the hotrocks and surface and identifying 'faint' targets. I will persist whilst seeking out more info.

I purchased the detector from the Net via WA.

Thanks so much for the advise so far. I am hoping to find a Infinium user somewhere near me so I can hit the field and compare (take a lesson).

Regards and yours in detecting,

Jim

PS. Detector bought new.

If there are any Inifinium users in Melbourne or Geelong way that are skilled at using the machine in the gold fields message me. I will give you a free flight to Maryborough to do some prospecting (with a little teaching attached).

:)

Regards,

Jim.

Hi Jim.
I have been using the Infinium for a long time and have a good idea how it should work.
I am Adrian SS on the Aussie forums.

If you want to talk to the best man re your Infinium I suggest that you give Phil Stearns a call on 0883967455
Phil was the repair agent for Garrett metal detectors in Australia for 20 + years and the Infinium was his specialty. He is retired now but still has a few odds and ends left over

HI Jim.
Had a listen to your sound track and what I could hear sounded like some out of GB noise along with some EMI. also there was at least one strong target signal.
You need to get the EMI cancelled out first and then do the ground balance.

When you do the EMI cancel be sure the mode switch is in lock.
when you have the EMI canceled to as good as you can get it, set mode to fast track, Disc to zero and do the ground balance as per the book. Be sure there ar no targets under the coil when you do the GB adjust.

When the GB is completed select Lock. It is rare to have to run in fast or slow tracking.

If you cannot get a good GB (unusual) then set in a bit of Disc gradually until the ground noise lessens. You should not have to go above a disc setting of 3.

There are a few other methods of ground balancing
