INFINIUM QUESTION

I JUST PURCHASED ONE OF THESE AND WHAT IS THE ONE MAJOR DRAW BACK OR PROBLEM I WILL FACE WITH THIS MACHINE...THANKS.

I'm just like you in that I just bought my first water machine (Excaliber). With those total lack of qualifications in mind, this is what I was able to gleen from others.

I looked long and hard at the Infinium and basically got the response from others that it was very slow and that it did not do well in trash.

Keep in mind that I have never used one, but the feedback held me back from getting it. I would love to have used one awhile to know for myself, but I couldn't afford that.

I went with the Excal with reservations because it is getting to be an old machine. Still, I couldn't ignore the results I see posted on here. I hope to find out soon how well it does.

A buddy of mine in Bermuda uses the Infinium and is happy with the results now that he switched to the 8" coil. Initially he used the 14" coil and had a heck of a time with it falsing and squawking. I traded my Excal for his Infinium for a while during a water hunt and within 5 minutes I wanted to trade it back, the noise was unintelligible.
Balancing the unit is key to success with this unit. The learning curve is also a little steep.
Besco switched to an 8" coil after a while and i tried it again on another hunt, What an Incredible Difference. No more squawking, super light compared to my Excal and really deep penetration. I still don't like the low/high vs high/low audio but it worked great. If we had more mineralization in Bermuda I would think of getting one as I believe it would outperform my Excal 1000 depthwise.
Taking an fair comparision of the two units I would still stick with my Excal 1000 but it's a close call.

Cheers,

BDA:cool:

Try PMing Besco or BlackDavy as they both have had good success with their Infiniums

I've had one for two years and I love it. But you need to get the mono coil its makes a big difference. I hate to say this but it is not the detector for the beginner.I've been detecting for 14 years and it took me a while to get the hang of it. Once you learn it the depth will amaze you.

this is the best report i have ever ready regarding this unit, i came within a phone call of buying one last year.

i understand it does a great job in the gold fields of austrilia to on small gold nuggets.

u located up there with beachunter and craig way

my interest is peaking again

thanks

I have and use both an Excal 1000 and an Infinium with the 8" mono coil. All these posts and others are correct. Ground balancing is the key to the Infinium and also possibly setting the discrimination to 3-5 if necessary if there are still bothersome high-low sounds at ends of swings. It slightly detunes it but it still plenty deep, deeper than VLF's. Look at the posts by Matt Mattson on GoldDredger.com and multiple posts on the Garrett Infinium Prospector Network for tips on ground balncing, etc. There are tricks that are not in the manual or tape. The iron reverse discrimination works pretty well on the Infinium also. The Infinium is my choice over the Excal unless there is way too much trash in the wet sand. In the deeper water, the same, but I'll dig a little more trash out there because with the control box hip-mounted it is so much easier to swing than the Excal. BTW there is also no way I would get rid of my Excal. Again, the multiple Mattson posts are the most straight-forward posts on the Infinium I have seen on the Net, and I have looked at a lot of info.

I'm about half hour from beach hunter, boston bob,and metaldig. I as also have an excalibur that I use on beaches that have many iron targets like pieces of lobster traps, they make the infinium tough to use as it is so sensitive. I've dug coins with the infinium that my excalibur gave me no signal at all. I gridded a section of beach and marked all targets infinium found two that excl. didn't touch and they were both nickels does that tell you something?
