INFINIUM LS

I'm new to this type of detector and I was wondering...I'm finding every tool that us kids left in the yard 30 yrs ago.I haven't found and coinage as of yet....having trouble getting used to the different tones. The things that I've found have been as deep as 10-12" deep, which I guess is good.It tells me that it's got plenty of depth to it!!! I know you should dig everything...but I'd like to,for the time being, limit the depth to 4-6" Is there any way to adjust the freq.to limit it or is it all done with the discrimination? One other thing...does Garrett make an exterior speaker for this so a person didn't have to always wear the headphones? Thanks,jachuck49.

The Infinium was designed to find gold in highly mineralized soils. That is why it finds deep targets, pop cans at 3 feet. The audio is modulated, in that the deeper targets give a softer tone. So, of you dig the targets with a loud clear tone with little or no sustained audio, you should get the more shallower stuff. The Infinium doesn't work well in Trashy areas. The machine has a hard time IDing and pinpointing a target if there are other targets in close proximity, unless you use the small 3 x 5 coil. You have to use the headset to hear the audio, as the unit has no on board speaker. The Infinium works well at hunted out beaches, farmers fields for relics and in gold bearing areas. I get the gut feeling that this might be your first machine. If you hang on to the Infinium for a while and get your hands on an ACE 250, you can knock out the iron, not use headsets and dig plenty of good targets including coins and rings. The reason I said hang on to the Infinium, is that it is a different machine altogether compared to the typical metal detector. It has a learning curve. However, to just pick up and try to learn an Infinium with no prior PI experience is really setting yourself up for a lot of frustrations.

Keep the Infinium.....it's a killer on deep gold. But learn a basic machine first. The ACE 250 packs a lot of technology which is packed into many higher priced machines. And it's got a great price.

I ONLY use my Infinium for beach/water hunting and some relic hunts. The rest of my hunts are with my other Garrett detectors. You may also want to look up the Garrett infinium LS Forum and direct some of your specific questions/discussion there.

There isn't much discrimination on an Infinium. It's like using a VLF detector in all metal. It was designed to go deep for gold and relics. Since it also is an underwater detector there is no outside speaker. You might try Radio Shack or some electronic outlet and see if you can pick up a plug-in speaker. THis detector was not designed for coinshooting or general detecting. As John stated you should pick up a 250 for that chore. The Infinium is a specialized detector for specialized hunting.
